---STORY BELOW---
Fory rolled his eyes as the truck destroyed the better part of his day. Most of the time, Fory had been doing what any self respecting person, or a five foot tall otter would, if you please. He’d been staring intently at his phone, doom scrolling as the rest of humanity and humanity adjacent creatures were watching things dip into all manner of problems.
It wasn’t exactly Fory’s fault, I mean the speeding pick up truck did blow through the stop light of course, it’s just that Fory had been tap tap tapping away at something of interest. Though he’d be deeply hard pressed to remember what it was at the moment, as he stared at the street pancake that should have been his phone. He thought maybe it could be salvaged until the second set of wheels thumped over it from a car turning the corner. His jaw dropped a bit, his auburn goatee dangled from his chin as he was agape. This was a miserable event for certain, at least that much didn’t need any social checking in on.
The otter scooped the remains up with a dash between cars once the light finally changed back to get him on the crosswalk. Everything in the palms of his paws was a gross mishmash of pieces. It ached a little to think how quickly it was gone. But at this point, Fory had to do what he’d truthfully been putting off for ages. It was in fact, time to purchase a new phone.
He’d been waiting for sales at the various online sites but now was an immediate need. Across town he’d hustle himself to the local phone store. He knew it well enough because it was next to a jewelry shop he’d frequent on occasion. Fory’s neck fur was a nice light striped brownish tan compared to the darker brown red tinge of him. It really helped set off the thick braced gold chain around his neck that jangled a bit as he moved towards his cell phone store.
At least he reckoned it had been early enough in the day that they’d no doubt be open for him. He could see the crown shaped logo of the store from the other side of the street. There seemed to be a little bit of a crowd, though that wasn’t too unusual. Making his way across traffic, Fory realized he’d actually been holding his phone remains this entire time. But given how destroyed it was, the otter found himself pitching it in a bin for a few moments as there was no way it could be anything more than refuse.
“Thank god for cloud storage.” Fory said under his breath, turning back towards the store itself.
Something must have happened as most of the crowd had dispersed by the time he turned around and someone at the inside of the door was locking it. He was confused completely as there was a sign being put up at the front of the completely glass framing of the entrance to this electronics store.
“All KING wireless locations closed for emergency staff training. Please come back tomorrow! When you’re looking for the best service, give KING a RING!”
The otter’s heart quickened a bit as he read the sign and met the gaze of one of the polo shirted employees. Now if there’s a single thing the customer has over a retail employee, it’s a cloying sense of guilt if you get one of those fresh newly minted employees. If the fates were with Fory, maybe, just maybe, he could figure this out. A plan quickly coiled itself around the mind of the tubey mammal. He stared towards the retail employee behind the locking door and waved his arms like a madman. Fory was tempted to pound on the glass, but this was a contest where the less attention he attracted the better. He could see inside multiple employees all making their way through the store towards the back area from the open glass front. Fory tapped his claw to the sign while looking at the employee and his other claw back to his own chest, mouthing the word “ME.”, hoping that the employee wouldn’t lock him out… because of the implication.
Yes, Fory had done a few white lies in his life, but pretending to be a store employee so he could buy a new phone. Alright, admittedly this may not have been the smartest plan… but as the employee stared back at him, then sighed, the twist of the front door’s lock opening, Fory knew at least he’d got a shot at fixing his issue.
The employee was a stern looking lioness that matched her almost off white polo shirt as she looked at the otter. “Geez, you really know how to cut it close. Are you new? I mean this is all hands on deck for this new training! You could have been fired. I mean you must be new, not even a uniform yet? Come on, come on, follow me, we’re going to need to be with the others.”
Slinking their way into the back, Fory’s eyes glanced around all the display phones as he whispered to the lioness, who really had already very nearly left him behind. Several steps ahead, he squeaked out a few apologies, which of note, contains the word lie. “
Yeah, look I’m really sorry about all of this. My phone… it got run over and I don’t have one.” The employee circled her body back, her head looking Fory up and down as she seemed incredulous.
“Are you saying you’ve shown up and you didn’t even do the orientation? You’re never going to be ready for the big launch tomorrow. Every single store has to be perfect!” Her words made Fory gulp as this really was going to be super confusing once he had to explain that he was actually wanting to be a customer… but that could wait, he’d just keep digging a deeper hole and really worry about a ladder later on.
“Yeah I really haven’t had anything at all for like a week. Not since I first got the hiring call, can you help me out? My name’s Fory.” The otter tried to pile on the miserable events as he walked with the now co-worker cat.
As Fory told her about a cataclysmic series leading to his untimely tardiness and week of woe, that absolutely was not his fault, the femme feline realized he was either the unluckiest creature she’d ever met, or possibly the most dumb. She concluded he was both.
They reached a hallway filled with various polo shirted employees, all of them transfixed on their phones. It was actually a strange coincidence once Fory saw them all in a line up through the hall, every single one of them a lion or lioness of some species. Many of them intently stared at the screens, though one did sneer towards Fory, asking what was going on with him.
Interrupting and already not wanting Fory to open his mouth with the stupid falling out again, the female lion just gave a quick glance and stated “Don’t worry about it, new guy messed up. It’s a whole thing.”
Met with admonishment and a look of possibly ruining whatever this thing was, Fory kind of kept to himself as the long hallway only had one door leading somewhere further else. He dared not speak with anyone as he was already filled with trepidation that this may not go his way. One by one, more and more employees started to go into the doorway. He couldn’t really hear anything, beyond the sounds of a loud talking, but it was really hard to make out with the thick walls.
The line nearly ended, he finally asked, “Is anyone coming back out?” to the lioness.
“Look, Fory, if you had watched the basic training video, once we’re finished, we head back out the back and come back tomorrow for the launch. Once everyone’s one-on-one training is done, everyone leaves through the alley exit and the manager locks up behind us, shuts off the lights.” she half whispered, half twisted a knife into his heart.
Fory realized he might really be in trouble as they weren’t going to be doing anything at all after the training. Maybe… maybe he could talk to the manager during or after the training. He just had to really fake his way through it. Sheesh, this was a lot and he felt like he was in over his head.
Soon enough, Fory stood leaning against a wall, everyone else had gone in, his pretend coworker, the rather upset lioness, the only one just before him now. There was a dagger thrown side eye his way as he really started to think this was a major mistake. He couldn’t go back out the front, it was locked. And the only exit… was through the training. All things told, he probably could have used the restroom. Though for a retail store, there wasn’t anything like that on site. Just this singular door. Must be a hallway beyond it he thought, and as the door opened, he was stunned by what he saw.
There are few things that set one’s mind to immediate panic but the face of an angry looking lion is one of them. A scowling scornful face of a lion in a black shirt with the tag ‘Manager’ across it as a paw is held up, a finger curling with a come hither now towards Fory.
“Fory is it? I don’t recall anyone hiring a Fory, unique name too. I do try to pay attention to my staff. I can only assume that corporate didn’t send the likes of you either. You and I are going to have a chat after we get done with your training, we’ll get to the bottom of this. Follow me, oh and here’s your phone. Your coworker mentioned you’d smashed yours? You’ll need a dummy phone to at least learn the new application.” the lion spoke with a rat-a-tat-tat of a machine gun spitting out matter of fact words and an underlying accusation that he knew something was off.
Leading Fory down a hallway, there was a door with a signed marked exit out he assumed to the alleyway, and another door with “EMPLOYEES ONLY” spelled out plain as day. Fory was sweating a bit under his fur, his gold chain felt a lot heavier than normal, but nothing compared to his conscience. As Fory entered past the door, he was in an empty room, which immediately made him feel odd. If this was the only other room in the building, where did the stock come from, where are the deliveries… something wasn’t quite right, but Fory didn’t have a moment to argue. He was quickly aware of everything needed of him, as the room housed only a movie projector screen and a single chair. Fory sat down as ‘Manager’ stood behind him and turned off the lights in the room. The screen lit up from a ceiling projector as the lion slowly growled from the darkness.
“Use the app.”
The only thing that seemed to be installed on the phone itself was an application called SCAR.RK with a crown icon, matching KING wireless’ logo. Fory didn’t recognize the file extension, but figured it may be custom. As he clicked it, the app pulled up immediately to a snow white blank screen. His eyes adjusted in the darkness though, this felt almost blinding. Though as he looked back towards the projection on the movie screen, there was something walking towards the screen from a far distance. It was a quadrupedal cartoon lion, Fory vaguely recognized it from somewhere. Maybe this was KING wireless’ mascot.
It only took a few seconds before it was fully in view on the projector screen. The lion was a bright reddish color with a mane that looked a bit off. It dripped along the screen, creating a lasting puddle that slowly spread to form a ground. It was visually interesting, though honestly more realistic than Fory would have expected from a corporate training video. They must have really wanted to wow people. The cartoonish cat was almost beyond uncanny valley as its movements were so exaggerated. It stalked almost as it walked, like it was getting ready to pounce from the screen itself circling back and forth on the screen, its paws tracking that black substance where it stepped as the position of the lion had it staring down directly at the single sitting employee in the room. Fory felt a bit small.
“Greetings, new employee. I am the KING. Scar of course, though you may call me my liege, my grace, my excellency, or my lord if you manage. King Scar will also do nicely. As you have in the palm of your hands, something new, something magnificent. Dare I say, sensational news to everyone that’s part of our growing family?”
Scar’s voice resonated with Fory as he really felt compelled to listen. He couldn’t explain it, but the more Scar spoke, the more it resonated with his mind. Fory felt really in sync with this voice, like whatever vibration it was on, it was the wavelength he just wanted to ride forever. He found himself sitting in rapt attention as Scar continued.
“Now I know that some of you were worried that your initial training was all that was going to become of the new self improvement app I’d been promising you. And I know some of you have been staring at that screen for weeks now, waiting for your next training course. Why some of you have even taken the initiative to try and get promoted ahead of schedule. I must say, I do applaud the effort. Several of you have moved on to other locations to scout potential talent and if you are still at your initial location, don’t worry, we promote from within.”
Fory hadn’t really considered it, but his mind did start to kind of hum like an engine in idle as he sat smiling, listening to King Scar carry on about this exciting news. Fory could just be a really good employee if he followed these steps, why he hadn’t considered it really, but he could just give working for KING a go. He could just be part of their staff. He wasn’t sure of the benefits, but considering that everyone he’d seen was going to be disappointed if he didn’t help out with the launch going smoothly tomorrow… he’d need to commit. Fory was absently nodding along now as he came to terms with how nice he imagined himself in a polo. He hoped they’d let him keep the gold chain while he worked. His face was lit with the wash of white from his phone screen beneath him, his eyes stared, blinking less and less however into the lion as it continued to pace at the screen.
“Now for those of you that are new hires, there’s some adjustments that will need to be made to ensure you’re the right fit for our culture here. We pride ourselves on our pride as it were. We don’t demand you be good, we demand perfection. It’s about taking the actions necessary to secure what you want in life. And right now, is there anything you want more than to be part of my kingdom?” Scar’s words curled around the mind of Fory as he struggled to gulp, something in his throat made him want to say no, he really really wanted this now. It was a growing passion, but he sat still, he watched the screen. After all, that is what he was instructed to do. Some other part of him demanded obedience now as it was a whole lot easier to follow instructions rather than do things by your own actions. Part of the pride, thought Fory, wow, that’s so special. He just hoped he could measure up to perfection… he was less than perfect…
The lights shifted on now as Fory blinked, a click from behind as Fory looked around. The lion manager from before was nowhere to be found. He stood up and confused, he started walking towards the door. The borrowed store phone with its still pulsing white light, he left on the chair as he felt so odd, like he wanted more training, something had happened perhaps. Maybe that’s why he didn’t feel perfect, he hadn’t had all that other orientation and training. He needed a better understanding. The otter’s paws tried to open the door out of the room, but it was locked from the other side. That wasn’t a good sign at all, Fory felt, but as he looked back towards the chair, what he saw was considerably more concerning.
Pouring out from the phone was a bubbling mass of what looked like almost a flood of black and red ooze. It was quickly starting to pool through the floor of the room and within seconds splashed against Fory’s feet. He had no time to react as this impossible scene played out in his mind, his initial thought was, oh no, I’ve fallen asleep during the movie…
Leaping a bit only to find himself landing back down into the mucky tar like slosh, it was warm and now up to his ankles. The chair somehow started to sink into the black gloop, as it seemed to be devoured in the middle of the room. Now there were only four walls, Fory, and a filling pile of glinting harlequin colored soup congealing and flowing.
“Please can someone help me?” Fory asked his paw pounding against the door as his head cleared a bit from that strange trance he felt lifted from. It was a clear moment that would almost immediately sink him back into a stupor as the very same voice from the film crept itself back to Fory’s attention.
“Help you, why yes Fory, I believe we can help each other in fact… you see from what I understand, you’ve been quite the deliciously deceiving little morsel. Sneaking into a pack of lions unknown to what dangers you may face, only to keep plying yourself deeper still. Oh I must say, I am flustered to think I could have missed you for our onboarding. You’re clever, devious, and if I may say so, almost entirely after my own heart. I think I have a special position for you…” Scar’s voice seemed to be rising from the floor itself as rising from the puddling mess, the very same cartoon line still dripping a sheen of gloss started to form before the otter’s eyes.
Fory was entranced immediately hearing Scar so close now, his mind almost entirely gone again as the thoughts he had noisily bouncing around seemed to melt away now that Scar purred in his presence. He dropped to his knees as it just felt so hard to talk, to think, to stand.
“Oh there’s no need for kneeling or bowing, not for someone that will find themselves requesting the same soon enough. We do after all promote from within and I do find others that share a like mindedness to be so rewarding… tell me… do you still wish to kneel? Why not rise to all fours?” Scar’s missive led Fory to pause for a moment as the gleaming sea of shine around him splashed away from his body, revealing that all of his limbs and underside were coated and changed. He had the forepaws and hindlegs of a lion now. His belly splashed against the surface and it coated with a coloration matching Scar’s own. As Fory thought about it, he confidently stood up on all four leonine limbs, feeling a new strength growing.
Soon enough, the fluid against his limbs continued to rise, not just coating over him, but seeping through the very fabric of Fory’s being. His flesh itself began to shape. His fur smoothing into a rubbery tactile sheen, as he felt his size starting to press outward, gaining mass. He was not only starting to look like a lion, he was changing into one completely. His internals shifted and simplified as this rubberization of this fluid helped him become accustomed to a lack of various needs. After all, Scar truly needed nothing beyond his own glorious machinations.
The rushing of the encroaching substance would pulse and glide up along Fory’s smoothing skin and fur as he found it almost hungry to aid in this transaction. Less and less Fory, more and more Scar. More than fair trade in value, as the otter’s semblance was lost soon in a growing wash of inky glory. Fory’s head tilted high as he could feel the tarrish slime congeal at his neck and throat, pressing and pulling down as he soon realized his body had grown a massive sumptuous mane now, just like that of Scar.
Scar stared right to Fory’s eyes now as they were almost vacant. The sensation of his form fully shifting away from his control and the purring noises of Scar’s voice created a pleasing almost polish of his very nature. He was smoothing out inside and out, his mind nothing more than a simple piece of putty to sculpt as Scar indulged easily.
“Are you prepared for our new kingdom, Scar?” the lion asked the red haired otter who tried to parse why Scar was asking him that. The question was hard to answer as that final rush of rubbery coating attached over his face, fully working to change him into a matching perfect clone of the very lion that stared back towards him. His mind flushed now and stolen away, Scar’s voice echoed as the form across from him finally fully smoothed and showcased his very own self.
“Why would you ask me that? Of course we’re prepared, it’s our plan. It’s going to go perfectly. Not a single scratch on our delicious bodies and soon, the streets will be overflowing with our pride of glistening felines…” Scar would answer himself. Moments later as they circled one another, inspecting how magnificent they looked, they’d move close, nuzzling and rubbing themselves together with squirking and compression to feel themselves as only true smooth reflections could.
It was a perfect feeling just before their perfect plan would happen. So many newly trained, loyal employees are sure to help pull in customers. The new loyalty rewards program, the self improvement application on the phones, and Scar’s most devious plan of all, which anyone could look close enough to find, inside every modern phone, a new type of battery coming from special minerals found in Africa mostly.
“Lithium Ion batteries.”
The Scars laughed to themselves, by the time it was in someone’s pocket it was already too late. They’d almost made it too obvious…
“L-Ion. The primates will never figure it out.”
