Despite the complex appearance of several gauges and heavy levers, steam engines are surprisingly easy to operate if you know what does what. You need to keep a certain level of pressure within the boiler, so that the steam is compressed enough to push the pistons, drive the wheels, and make the engine go. Then you’ve got a brake to stop it when you want to, a few other bits and bobs to make the ride smoother, and a level that makes it go peep-peep. That’s the most fun level, in my humble opinion. :)
The fire? That’s just to fry your bacon and eggs over, in the morning. ^^
