This is part of a Pokemon redesign series of illustrations that's inspired by the practice of having regional variants of some Pokémon, a kind of revisit of old designs for new generations of games. Pokémon are redesigned to suit the culture of the region the game is set in. These redesigns are often pretty easy to follow due to Pokémon regions being based on real-world counterparts, some variants more nuanced in their mythology than others. This series of illustrations will be using real world locations to inspire new designs in the same way.
For the most part I'll be sticking to general themes or specific pieces of mythology as to avoid any political discourse.
So why Italy? This redesign was heavily inspired by the look of ancient Roman Aqueducts as well as the shields used by the roman legions.
