The Euphorigen
Other names: Joy Virus
Description: The Euphorigen, also known as the Joy Virus, is a highly contagious virus that infects living organisms through direct contact, specifically, hugs and kisses are more effective. It is known for inducing extreme euphoria in its hosts in the sense of sickening joy, leading to a range of symptoms including long-term hallucinations, dilated pupils, frequent smiling, constant laughter, colorful saliva, mania episodes, strong inclination to indulge in activities that bring pleasure, and an uncontrollable urge to spread happiness wherever they go. Every infected individual will eventually develop all these symptoms, though the intervals between new symptoms vary among each person.
Over time, the infected may also develop a lack of humility and engage in potentially dangerous activities all in the name of happiness, whether they are injured or even killed in the process. Alternatively, some infected individuals may seek out individuals with depression or anxiety, following them around and attempting to comfort them in any way possible with the risk of infection always apparent. While there hasn’t been an official title for those infected by the Euphorigen, the running nicknames are 'Happy Heads' and 'Joy Zombies'.
It is believed that the virus works by altering brain chemistry, focusing all energy on supplying the dopamine and adrenaline molecules in order to strengthen and increase the body's vitality linked with any positive feelings and emotions. Dopamine and adrenaline are neurotransmitters that are involved in the regulation of mood, pleasure, and arousal, so it is plausible that the virus could cause an increase in these neurotransmitters in order to produce the symptoms. Since those infected withhold some level of sentience and intelligence, they may seek out targets of affection. Basically, they can be anyone the infected holds strong feelings towards under a positive light. For example, once infected they will set their sights on their love interest and violate any boundaries in an effort to pleasure and comfort them. Alternatively, the infected will become subservient to them and comply with almost any request their target of affection may have, to their understanding. Of course, the risk of infection will always be apparent no matter the circumstances.
Origins: The origins of the Euphorigen are unknown, but there are two theories. The first theory is that the virus came from outer space in the form of a meteorite that struck down on the planet, releasing the virus in a state of matter that began infecting anyone who came into contact with it. The second theory is that the joy virus was created in a laboratory as an experimental drug, but it grew out of control and leaked out into the world.
Impact on society: The impact of the Euphorigen on society has been significant. Infected individuals often engage in activities that bring them pleasure, regardless of the consequences, which can lead to dangerous situations. In addition, the virus has been known to target individuals with depression or anxiety, leading to a breakdown in personal boundaries and potentially harmful situations for both the infected and their targets of affection. The virus has the potential to instigate an apocalyptic event if left unchecked, as the infected will prioritize their own happiness over the well-being and survival of civilization as a whole.
Inspired from a cartoon, this idea is ironic to the usually negative connotations of viruses and while it technically causes worldwide happiness, it's not exactly under a positive light. But it sure is a hell of a way to feel good. Man, my imagination sure is twisted. Do you like it? :3
I'm open to any feedback or questions you guys may have regarding this. Don't hold back.
