The amplification circuit on this beautiful 3rd generation Ipod touch shitted out. The Ipod still worked and I didn’t see a reason to though it away. So, I had to make a few modifications to make it work. First, I used a Cmoy amp to replace the built in Ipod amp. Seconded, because the amp circuit was fried I had to use the “Ipod jack” to power the Cmoy. I was going to splice a 3.5 mm headphone jack with a Ipod adapter. But, that would be a lot of work so I just bought a Fiio on for $10.
Performance:
It is a little too much base. But that could just be the headphones. It has no distortion. I said NO distortion. Not, a little or minimum; NO distortion. It has antiquate amplification. Just a few millimeters on the knob, is more than sufficient.
Devices used:
Cmoy Amp using micro components
SONY MDR-XB500 Headphones
Fiio L1 adapter
Total cost to build:
$30 (If kit is used)
PS.
Headphines and Ipod are NOT factored into the cost. But, I hope you know that.
PPS.
I do not sell these. If you want one. Build it, or search Ebay.

For as much money as junk like this and the Zune cost, you would expect it to have superior sound from the shelf, but my 74USD NWZ-A728 sounds tons better than my nearly 300USD Zune HD 32GB whos treble makes me deaf in both ears and distorts the highs really bad :( my NWZ had a crap load of equalizers and other sound enhancers to get that perfect sound and could use practically ANY headphone/earbud out there, cheap or $$$ and it would sound wonderful.
The Zune on the otherhand, blah, rubbish, you only get Genré preset equalizers and nothing else :(

When ever you deal with digital there is always a little distortion. That is why you can still get turn tables. BUT there is no excuse for that. Out of a high cost set up there should bet a better standard. The thing is this AMP is a simple analog amplify with a couple of caps to lower draw on high bass songs. With the lighter resistors it really turns the bass up quite a bit. Any way, it wouldn't help with your distortion problem. It just wouldn't distort it further. If it is not to late I would file a formal complaint and ask for a refund. I know that is not always a option, especially over a extended period of time. I hate to say cut your losses and enjoy the better MP3 player but I cant think of a way to clean up the signal with out throwing big bucks down on a high end sound system. Try up loading the audio to it in a different for mat MP3, MB, DCT Ect. that might help but don't quote me on it. Sorry I can't be much help. Oh, it might be possible to distort it back but, it would take one hell of an AMP.
I pretty much scrapped the thing and is paper weight now XD
Microsoft tried, and did a nice job, but I am sticking with Sony from now on. *drooling over the X series Walkman* Zune is Microsofts rebel to the iPods I guess since it is just about as bland as it, it focuses so much on multimedia more than music quality, what portable music players should be all about, quality portable music :) oh well :(
And what you just mentioned... if I get a busted Zune from online somewhere, I will give that a try and see what happens... might end up frying something lol
