Another character for the Pen-and-paper Fallout game. This time... a ghoul.
Dorian Cay was born far from the Capital Wasteland in the unforgiving toxic ruin known as The Pitt. He could do little else but watch as his parents degenerated into Trogs before his eyes before having to hide from them as he did the Wildmen and other twisted wretches of the city. The day the Brotherhood of Steel arrived was the best day of his life. The violent purge they brought ironically resumed his sense of hope and when Paladin Henry Casadin offered to take him along with all the other unmutated children he crawled out from his hole and gladly followed him to the Capital Wasteland.
From early on, Dorian showed a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together. Seeing this as a sign his mind was of a more scholarly bent, the Brotherhood Scribes took him under their care and taught him how to repair and maintain all the equipment that passed by his desk. Dorian however had difficulty finding a particular order he fit under. He understood and respected the Order of the Quill’s need to seek out the written word of long ago. He Enjoyed the constructive feeling brought about by the Order of the Shield’s work in the defensive technologies. The Order of the Sword’s obsession with offensive weapons technologies filled his need to create. But the day before he would be forced to choose… the schism in the Brotherhood occurred. Elder Owyn Lyons’ and Paladin Henry Casadin’s arguments had reached critical mass and the Brotherhood was sundered as half their ranks chose to leave. Although Dorian was sympathetic to Elder Lyons’ ideas of using the technology to help others (After all he was one such soul) his loyalty was to Casadin, the man who’s face he had for years associated with his liberation. And so… leaving a note explaining his reasons for doing so, he left the brotherhood to become an Outcast.
Life in the black Robe did not come easy for him, his anger flared any time someone called an outsider a ‘Savage’ or a ‘Tribal’. But he kept calm and worked along side his Black and red clad brothers. Then one day in an old Schoolhouse the floorboards broke out from underneath him and he fell into the darkness with a great deal of rubble. After a failed attempt at a rescue the Outcasts had to declare him dead and leave.
In the black he lay pinned under a pool of irradiated groundwater, slowly soaking up the rads and only able to stay alive by eating the occasional Radroach that tried to nibble on him and drinking the water. He grew ill and whatever the Pitt had started long ago, the low levels of radiation finished. When some scavengers dug him out he had passed over into the state of Lucid ghoulification.
Ashamed at his current state and unable to face his former colleagues he only slunk back to Fort Independence long enough to grab his personal belongings and turn his Computer Station off.
Now out in the wasteland and no longer restricted by petty politics he turns his scientific knowledge to whatever bent he wishes, more often than not to aid the very tribals that the Outcasts spurned.
As you can see Dr Dorian Cay has most of his original hair, wears the black robes of an Outcast Specialist and isn't above creating his own portable computer out of Pices from old computers, Lunchboxes and parts of an old Robobrain.
