Light filtered in through the window as Miranda began to stir, slowly sitting up and stretching as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She looked around at her empty bed before hearing a deep grumble from outside “I guess they're getting an early start today.”
After getting dressed she followed the grumbles to behind the house where Derrick and a small figure on his shoulders were washing the back of a wyvren's head, causing it to grumble and growl
“I know, I know” Derrick muttered as he patted the large drake's nose “You hate baths but you need one, you're starting to smell”
“I was wondering what all the ruckus was” Miranda said as she walked over towards them
“Mama!” The small figure called as it turned to look back at her, dropping the soapy cloth onto Derricks head before jumping off of his shoulders and running over to her, eagerly jumping into Miranda's outstretched arms.
The tiny creature was, at first glance, a white unicorn with a brown mane, the first most obvious difference was that her horn, while still in the usual place for a unicorn was black round and shiny. The next difference Miranda was reminded of as their claws dug into her shoulders as she hugged her. After a second Miranda tried to push her away, holding her at arms distance as the little beast giggled, letting her see the child's tail that was the same shape as her fathers but covered in white fur and ended in a brown tuft of hair.
“Good morning Delilah, what have you and daddy been up to this morning?” Miranda asked as the child wiggled in her grasp.
“We've been cleaning Eberron!” The little girl giggled as Miranda put her down “Daddy said he was starting to smell but we couldn't tell because or our pretiet noses!”
“I said petite noses” Derrick chimed in as he walked over while taking the towel of his head “although they are very pretty” He wrapped and arm around Miranda as the nuzzled their snouts
“Me too!” Delilah cried, putting her hands up, demanding to be included
They both chuckled before each grabbing an arm each and lifting her into a hug
After Delilah mashed her nose against theirs for a bit Miranda asked “So how long do you think washing off the bigger stinky lizard will take? We have to check on Tiffany before meeting Charles, Serena and Sorin at the cave and heading over to Darren's hold for the party, he'll be grumpier than Eberon if we're late.”
“He's getting better” Derrick protested “at least as long as the twins are around to keep him in line.”
“Uncel Darren is a meany tail!” Delilah giggled
“He sure can be” Miranda cooed as they started walking back towards the wyvren that had rolled onto its back while they were talking “Now we better get going”
….............................................................................
The three of them walked down the path that used lead to the temple, where the arches once stood was now a large inn in front of an even larger stable from which a wyvern was just leaving. A few kinds both dragon and otherwise were walking in and out of the large front doors, once the construction was completed you would have thought it was cursed by how the townsfolk acted towards it but now it had become a fully functional inn and a small trading post.
As they approached the front door they heard a commotion before a familiar white and brown unicorn could be seen dragging a large feline out by their ear
“I've got no problem with handmade goods” Tiffany spat “but next time before you try and get away with passing off cheap painted trinkets as rare artifacts in my inn I want you to think very carefully about who exactly it is you're trying to rob and what they would do to you”
“Yeah yeah” The cat replied begrudgingly “Dragons can be dangerous folk”
“Dragons nothing!” she shouted before letting go of his ear and giving him a swift kick in the rear “I'm talking about ME, now get!”
The cat rushed past them clutching his ratty hand bag to his chest
“Never a dull moment is there” Miranda said before Delilah rushed over to Tiffany and hugged her leg
“Not lately at least” She replied before lifting the little girl and carrying her back to her parents “Not that I want it to be, a little ruckus always makes things interesting”
“So are you gonna be alright here with us gone?” Derrick asked as he took Delilah back in his arms
“Shouldn't be a problem, it'll be like when you two were off negotiating the other neutral zones around the kingdom”
“But last time there weren't militias running around trying to undo all of the progress we've made”
“It'll be fine” She answered confidently “The kings forces have broken their leadership and should be mopping up any stragglers shortly” She started walking back into the inn with the three of them behind her “And if anyone does try something we've got a few extra guards and Mr moody just in case.” She looked up towards the upper floor at a Brown green eyed dragon looking over the main floor
“So Durstin is still here then” Miranda asked
“He probably still thinks he owes us” Derrick commented
“I know we've forgiven him but he did try to” Miranda glanced over at Delilah who was looking around the large hall “K-I-L-L us”
“I wont complain about a little extra muscle” Tiffany commented as she waved up at him “It doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes either”
Durstin suddenly looked flustered before moving away from his spot to patrol some other area.
“I'll get him sooner or later”
“Geeze Tiff” Miranda responded “And you thought I had it bad when you first met Derrick”
“You're the one who told me to get my own” She walked behind the front desk, picking up a few documents “We should be fine while you're off at your fancy party.”
“Sorry Tiffany” Derrick responded “but you're the only person we can trust to run things here”
“I know I know” she answered before telling a passing rabbit to bring more towels to one of the rooms “I get to go to the next one though, I should have Durstin worn down enough to accompany me by then. Now off you get, I have an inn to run.”
…...............................................................................................................................................................
Eberron touched down with his usual grace on the cave's landing platform before the three of them dismounted.
“We'll be here for a bit” Derrick said to the wyvren as it sniffed the air “So go say hi to Sibery but be we're leaving tonight so get some rest.”
They wyvern grumbled back happily before flying off to the roost at the top of the mountain. Nearly a moment later the doors opened revealing Burtrum's prime golem on the lift.
Delilah didn't waste a second in rushing over to him “Grandpa!” She shouted stopping just before she jumped into his arms and curtsying as best she could
“Very polite young lady” He responded before picking her up as Derrick and Miranda joined them on the lift “You'll be a proper young women yet”
“Don't make her think she needs to be polite to be proper” Miranda chided as she ran her hand through Delilah's mane “She'll be proper weather or not she fallows all those stuffy rules”
“Yes yes” He replied as the lift began descending “But knowing a few manners can never hurt”
“I suppose, so how long have Serena, Charles and Sorin been here?”
“They arrived this morning and are currently having lunch in the dining hall”
“You'll have to say hi to them for me” Derrick said as the lift slowed “I can't get sucked into a conversation if I want to finish up the last few commissions before we leave tonight.”
They nuzzled each other before Her Delilah and Burtrum left to the main hall while Derick stayed on the lift.
Burtrum let Delilah down before opening the dinning hall and announcing “Ladies Miranda and Delilah have arrived”
The three sitting at the table lookd up from their meal before getting up, Serena and Charles looked the same as ever if not a little grayer around the snout. Sorin on the other hand had grown quite a bit in the last 8 years, now coming up to Miranda's shoulders with his horns, now almost fully developed, curving down before pointing backwards at the tip.
“Hello you two” Serena said as they approached “Where's Derrick?”
“He's off finishing a few orders before we leave” Serena replied as Delilah walked over and greeted Sorin before they and Charles walked back to the table.
“I'm surprised he has the time with all the diplomacy you two have been up to.”
“He's had to cut back on the orders he takes and I've been able to help him with the more complicated ones but it's nowhere near as many as he used to when that was all he did”
“With all the money you two have had to pour into the dragon's introduction” Serena looked over at the children who were both watching as Charles preformed a few slight of hand tricks before leaning closer to her and whispering “Are you three going to be alright?”
“We'll be fine, it's true that our horde isn't nearly what it used to be but we have enough to live comfortably, besides, it's not like having all that gold just sitting around was helping anyone.”
“If you're sure” Serena responded as they walked over to the table where Delilah was carefully inspecting Charles's hands “Just know we can help if you ever need it, isn't that right dear.”
“Oh definitely” Charles responded as he pulled a gem from behind Delilah's ear “We couldn't let anything to happen to our favorite grand niece”
“Enough about that then” Serena said as they sat down “Are you two and Derrick all ready for the party tomorrow?”
“We sure are aren't we Delilah?”
“Yeah! I love visiting Uncle meany tail!”
“I know you do” Miranda replied with a chuckle “And do you know what this party is for?”
“Ummmmmm”
“The party is for Aunt kayla becaaaaaaaaaaause”
“Oh! Aunt Kayla is having an egg!”
“Thats right!” Miranda replied
“And that means I'm not gonna be the littlest anymore!”
“You'll still be little though” Sorin teased while putting a hand on her head
“Not the littlest though!”
….......................................................
The six of them and a group of golems carrying an array of boxes walked out of the lift's door onto the landing platform just as Eberron and Sibery were landing. Sibery put a wing over Eberron's back and preened the back of his head while Eberron tried to shake her off to no avail. It was easy to see the similarities between the two with them right next to each other and Miranda found herself relating to Sibery over how hard it can be to bathe your child.
“Why are we leaving so late?” Delilah asked as she tried to rub the sleep out of her eyes
“Well we know how bored you get on long flights” Derrick answered “And we thought it would be better if we could fly while you're sleeping so you don't try to crawl onto Eberron's tail again”
“I wasn't gonna fall dad” She responded as Derrick picked her up “Sorin said that he did it before.”
“I think Sorin” Derrick glared at the young dragon who was pretending to not pay attention to them as he helped load Sibery's saddlebags “was just making things up to impress you.”
“Whaaaaaaaat?” She asked in a big yawn “No waaay”
“You'll just have to trust me” He replied as he approached Ebberon, lifting her up into the large saddle on his back “Now get comfy, we'll be leaving in just a bit.”
“Okaaaaaaaayy” She replied slepily as Miranda walked over to them from chatting with Serena and Charles
“Is our little flower about ready for bed?” she asked as the two of them went over the cargo list
“Just about, are they all ready to go?” He asked, motioning towards Sibery
“Yeah, all the gifts for the egg shower are loaded and ready.”
Derrick walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist “And did you tell them about our little gift?” He asked as he lightly squeezed her stomach
She placed her hands on his “Not yet, this is Kayla, Shayla and Darren's party, if we announce it now Darren will think we're trying to upstage him”
“You're probably right” He replied while nuzzling the side of her muzzle “We've got a bit before anyone notices our e-”
“Don't say the e word” Miranda responded, cutting derrick off “Delilah wasn't in one and we don't know if this one will be, I don't want to jinx it, the idea of having to lay a.....you know what still kinda freaks me out.”
“You knew that was a possibility when you said you wanted another one” Derrick replied with a chuckle as he let go of her and finished strapping the cargo in “And it's not that bad, reptiles birds and some mammals have been doing it since forever”
“I know, but still I'd rather avoid finding out if I can.” She stepped up into the saddle, making sure Delilah was secured just in front of her before taking the reins
“I wanna sit in the back!” The little girl protested trying to not fall asleep with each word
“Maybe if you're awake in a few minutes” Miranda answered as Derrick climbed up behind her, strapping himself in behind the two “Now is everyone ready?”
Charles, Serena and Sorin who was now holding Sibery's reins nodded as the two wyvrens lifted themselves up and moved towards the edge of the platform
Derrick wrapped his arms around both of their waists as she looked back at him before looking down at her soon to be sleeping daughter. She smiled to herself at the thought of everything she had found by climbing this mountain before snapping the reins and sending the wyvren off the platform and out into the night sky.
After getting dressed she followed the grumbles to behind the house where Derrick and a small figure on his shoulders were washing the back of a wyvren's head, causing it to grumble and growl
