Well, it was most likely needed by primate ancestors to help digest leaves. And it might also be harboring beneficial bacteria that help the colon function.
I haven't watched the whole movie, only parts of it, but they never seemed to mention humans existing in the past... *shrugs* It was mostly just a joke anyway. ^_^;;
