Jason is a 17-year-old husky living in Miami. Before, he used to live in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he had many friends despite being nerdy and introverted. His father used to work for a technology corporation, but things took a turn for the worst when an incident resulted in massive layoffs in late 1977. Looking for a new job, Jason's father found one in Miami, meaning that they would have to move there. Jason, devastated that he had to leave his hometown and friends behind, had a hard time adjusting to the wildly different culture of this new city. Even being a middle class family, a lot of wealthy people lived around them who either did not have kids or weren't interested in Jason and preferred their closed-off friend groups. When Jason did make friends, they were short-lived and involved some form of screwing up that led to him becoming a social reject, diminishing his self-confidence. Currently, his only friend is Ceres who is much more accepting. It's now the summer of 1981, and Jason must look for ways to improve himself and see if he has a future worth living.

Ceres is a 17-year-old cat whose family owns a small auto shop in Miami that has been in business for several generations. Unlike his older brother, Neil, he is not as interested working on cars and looks for something more exciting, like coding and computers. He is quiet and introverted like Jason, so they quickly became close friends when they met in 1979. When he doesn't have his parents to talk to, Jason looks to Ceres for reassurance, who is always happy to help. In return, he usually helps him work on cars for some extra payment. If they aren't doing that, they often hang out at their respective homes or the local mall. But, he isn't without problems of his own, but he fears ridicule and refuses to discuss it.
