Rumble had so much going for it to be unique and imaginative, and all we got in the end was a forgotten imitator.......Why couldn't Rumble have kept the wrestling theme but done something more faithful to Monster On The Hill novel, like say where Tentacular is one of the main heroes, and the actual villain is a rogue monster or entity who poses a greater threat , not only to wrestling, but to monsters and humans alike??
But no, that's too hard, so all we get it the cookie-cutter "safe and relatable" underdog story for kids about a fat, lazy coward with daddy issues who gets treated like trash by society, getting pulled off the streets and trained by a coach to compete in a sporting event to defeat the world-famous reigning champion (i.e. a muscular jock, who despite actually working hard to get to where he is, turns out to be nothing but a selfish jerk who only cares about the fame and money, and ends up a sore loser after the hero defeats him), struggles through training, until he realises that following the traditional rules of the sport isn't his thing, so he gives up trying to become physically stronger and just starts "being himself", and ends up winning by relying on slapstick comedy, the power of love, and his newfound "inner strength" that somehow magically makes him a thousand times stronger than the champion when he looks like he's about to lose, and then goes back to just being a fat loser again......
It's like the idea was a ground-breaking innovator, but the end product was a forgotten imitator shi. I think Paramount wanted to wash their hands clean of Rumble by the time it came out.....
