It's good that she went to therapy. However, I don't think she was honest with her therapist. Her past is very unclear but we know from Lore that she had no family or lost one and that she grew up in a violent world. She is certainly a psychopath but that is a wide spectrum of disorders. She is capable not only of killing or torturing her victims but is also able to have higher feelings and emotions. She loves her son very much. However, her relationship with Zebra only works for the fact that he is easy to control. He doesn't ask unnecessary questions and isn't interested in her professional life and past. If he caused problems she would probably kill him. However, I think she herself also recognizes that her partner is damaged like her. People experiencing violence react differently. One way is to build themselves a new "strong" ego. Such an individual is like a diamond. Hard and cold, however, it is also very fragile and inflexible.

Entirely possible that it wasn't her choice.
