Killtusks are the mutated descendants of Iguanas.
The average male Killtusk stands about 8-9 feet tall and are usually about 20 feet in length from beak to tail. They are massively muscled, with powerful legs, a barrel-shaped body and immensely thick neck. Healthy bulls can weigh several tonnes, with females being about a ton lighter than they are. They're tough enough to survive anything short of a mini-nuke short, and even then it usually takes more than one shot to fell one. Their scaly skin is usually drab brown or greenish-brown, but their tendency to frequently roll in dirt means they're often the same color as the local ground. Their swaggering gait and stocky build low to the ground makes them extremely stable and quick to turn, but limits their speed. However, they are able to surge forwards for short distances, reaching 27 kph. Their massive head terminates in a large, parrot-like beak sharp enough to shear through whole tree trunks, driven by jaws that are the strongest of any wasteland beast. They had a battery of around 600 teeth at the back of their mouth which when combined with their beak, allows Killtusks to slice and chew their way through any plant they come across. Killtusk's have human-level eyesight, but they have superb hearing and a highly acute sense of smell, able to follow a smell for miles and even sniff out water underground. Growing from its cheeks are long tusks, which in bulls can grow to be 6-feet in length. Their tusks grow continuously through the animal's life and are often rubbed against rocks and trees to keep them clean. Their tusks are extremely sharp and while they're mostly used for digging up roots and tubers, they make effective weapons, able to rip open steel, dig through solid stone and impale any creature foolish enough to annoy them. The impact from their head alone is enough to kill or maim a Deathclaw and past reports claim that these beasts have even been seen impaling Mirelurk queens and forcing them to the ground to gore them. Despite their reptilian heritage, they are warm-blooded and give birth to live young, with females birthing litters of up to 20 at a time, each one little bigger than a domestic cat. The babies are able to handle plant matter with 24 hours of being born and instinctively roll in dirt. The babies imprint on the first thing they see, usually their mother. It can take them over 20 years to reach anywhere adult size, provided they avoid getting eaten by the wastelands many carnivores.
Killtusks are nomads, randomly roaming the wasteland in search of food. Social beasts, Killtusks gather in small herds, each made of dominant males, who are usually the most gigantic and powerful, the females they've claimed, and their young, as well as the occaisional non-dominant males, who are tolerated by the leaders as long as they behave submissively. Such toleration is strained at breeding time, when all the males duel ferociously to maintain their harems, or in the case of the bachelor males, fight to gain their own females, usually the female offspring of the current ruler. Killtusk mating duels can last for hours and are immensely violent, with over half of the fights ending in the death of a combatant. If the young challenger kills a reigning bull, he obtains the loyalty of the deceased's entire harem. A non-fatal fight usually wins him half, or most of the younger ones as most of the adult females are too affectionately attached to their mate.
Killtusk herds wander across the entire U.S wasteland, and in their long, long lives, an adult Killtusk may have seen every state. Killtusk's have no set breeding season, typically mating whenever there's an abundance of food. However, such abundance is never guranteed to last until the young are born. Most youngsters are born while the herd is on the move, so are usually forced to quickly adapt. This usually kills off the weaklings and while the mother and immediate family members have been seen mourning or carrying dead hatchlings, they won't stop travelling. Predators also take a severe toll on the young, provided they can get past the ever-vigilant adults. If an injured or elderly Killtusk is accidentally left behind, they will continue to follow the herd's scent. If it goes cold, they search for a new herd.
Their size, toughness and ability to devour almost any plant they find means that a lone Killtusk is able to survive and is immune to all but the occasional Deathclaw pack. When safe, the young spend most of their time either eating, sparring each-other or pestering the adults. Even the dominant males are extremely tolerant of being rammed, climbed on and generally harassed, even if the young aren't his. Although they are herbivorous, Killtusks are highly aggressive and will attack anything that startles or annoys them. When they spot a potential threat or sudden movement, A killtusk will instantly begin roaring and stamping the ground in a noisy threat display that alerts the rest of the herd, before surging forwards to kill the problem. Goring the attacker with their tusks, Killtusks also bite and stomp ferociously and continue battering the enemy until it stops moving. Since their own mauling tends to make the victim move, Killtusks tend to keep attacking even after the unfortunate creature is dead, meaning the corpse is either torn to pieces or smashed into a bloody mess. This savagery extends to smaller carnivores that are harmless to them, including wasteland dogs and even humans unlucky or foolish enough to surprise them. Their ancestral enmity with Deathclaws makes them extremely hostile towards other reptilian carnivores they come across, such as Geckos and Nightstalkers.
Despite their ferocity, a killtusk taken while young can imprint on humans or other sentient races, becoming extremely attached to kind and gentle carers and as they get bigger, will bond with and protect any new additions to the family. A Killtusk's unrivalled strength makes them excellent pack animals and mounts, as they are usually compliant towards the humans they recognize and can be taught to understand a wide variety of verbal commands, and their tendency to sniff out and dig up buried water sources is invaluable in drier regions. Even tamed and domesticated Killtusks retain their territorial nature and quick tempers, but rarely lash out at their owners or other beasts they recognize. However, this makes them extremely useful as a form of protection, as they'll scare off or kill any predator and attack raiders who threaten their humans, even keeping their owner's children between their legs while they fend off attackers. Anyone who manages to tame a Killtusk will still have to let the beast leave if it catches the scent of a receptive one of the opposite sex, to avoid it becoming aggressive. Should someone they are attached to die, Killtusks often mourn the death, usually not eating for several days. Those who lose their owners in the wasteland are frequently seen guarding the corpse, nudging them and seeing off any scavengers until the body decomposes. More than one looter has been killed while trying to access a corpse, not realizing that the nearby Killtusk is guarding the body until it's too late.
There are not many herbivores in Fallout, so I had an idea of a large and powerful herbivore strong enough to challenge Deathclaws. Based it on Placerias. The legionnaire is there for size.
