Obligatory lore dumb because who doesn't love that stuff.
As wielders of magic, every dragon's mana pool fills naturally, but every individual has a unique way of filling it faster. It could be as simple as standing in sunlight, to as specific as, "the adrenaline rush from being on the verge of death." The more complex, the quicker it work usually.
Depending on this Catalyst, there are some dragons that can effectively "overclock" themselves by self-feeding into their own catalyst. Taking Vibe for example, his catalyst is malice. Simply being around those feeling hatred, jealously, or that otherwise have ill-intent, feed his catalyst. As such, he can feed his own malice into his catalyst, but that quickly causes a feedback loop that becomes difficult for even skilled casters to stop.
Mana is produced too rapidly, and if it can't be stopped, the caster ultimately "fulminates," choking on their own mana, something akin to rapid blood poisoning.
It's a very, very specific analogy, but if anyone's played Metroid Prime 3, it essentially works the same as Hypermode and Corrupt Hypermode.
