Someone asked over on DA about the size of my sketchbooks for my initial sketches. They're 3.5 x 5 inches (9x12.7 centimeters). The tiny size is something of an idea I got from wolfkidd. He does this all the time, and I think it's a very dandy lil' way to get ideas down without worrying about any details at all (as you can see in the sketch here).
Then later you can take the shape and layout and blow it up onto larger paper with a more detailed pencil version. Granted about 80% of the time I skip the middle step and just blow it up into photoshop and "pencil" it out digitally.
