The Dog and the Hawk
By: Michael Deltair
One day, a hawk and a dog were born. The nest of the hawk laid above the home of the dog, where the dog's mother
and master lived. Nestled in the mountains, the warm sun shone upon them both. The small chick looked down at the
puppy when it's mother left to find food. The dog's mother had fallen asleep, and it felt the gaze of another. The dog
walked from the safety of his mother toward the tree where the nest laid and looked up at the hawk.
“Hello dog,” greeted the hawk.
“Hello hawk,” replied the dog. “Would you like to come and play with me?”
“I cannot, though I would like to,” said the small bird.
“But why is that?” inquired the dog.
“Because I am not able to.”
As the day became weeks, and the weeks became months, the dog had grown and become bigger and stronger. It had
become strong enough for run and sense other animals. His master found it to be the right time to train it to help him
hunt, deep in the mountains where there were no others.
The hawk also began to gain strength. It soon grew, like the dog, and began to outgrow the nest it had been born in.
It's wings tried to flap, but still lacked to strength to do it more than a few times.
When the dog returned from hunting with his master, he went back to the tree, and looked up at the hawk.
“Hello hawk.”
“Hello dog”
“Can you come down and play now?”
“I cannot. I can not yet leave here,” replied the hawk.
“But why is that?” asked the dog.
“Because, I am not yet able to.”
The months quickly past by, and the two continued to grow stronger. Soon, the nest was no longer able to support the
hawk and his mother, so the hawk left his home, to find his own.
The dog became stronger and stronger as well. Because of this, his master felt the need to use him more often. Soon,
the dog started to lose his energy from having to do so much. His body became scared and battered from hunting. Despite his age, the dog began to feel fatigued, but kept doing as his master wished for him to do.
One day, the hawk returned to see his friend. He took a perch near the dog and greeted him.
“Hello dog, it has been a long time.”
“Hello hawk, it is good to see you after all this time. Where did you go?”
“I had to leave my home. I became too big, and needed to find my own place,” replied the hawk.
“I would have liked to play with you before you left, but that is in the past,” said the dog. The hawk tilted his head and
looked at the weary expression the dog had.
“Dog, I must ask you. We were both born at the same time. I feel strong, but you seem so defeated and tired. Why is
that?”
“My master needs me in order to live,” explained the dog. “Though I know this, it has taken its toll on me. I no longer
feel full of energy as I used to feel. I only feel that this life is much too harsh on one such as me.”
“But dog, why don't you leave as I did?” asked the hawk. The dog dropped his head as he looked at his friend.
“Because I do not know any other way to live. Because I am not able to.”
