The cool cats of Surf Shore City! mrreeowww. I love cats so you know there’s gonna be a bunch living in Surf Shore
She's a snow snow leopard! Clarice's parents were both run of the mill snow leopards, but their daughter Clarice is afflicted by a rare genetic disorder called Snowy Fur Disorder, SFD for short. Instead of a coat of fur protecting her, she has a thin (thicker in the winter) layer of snow. It's unknown what causes this disorder, but it most commonly occurs when two animals from cooler climates have a baby together. Besides the snowy fur, which freezes in the cold and drips in the heat, the disorder causes a number of other issues like hypersensitivities to light and sound and sight/hearing deficiencies.
Why does Clarice live in Surf Shore? It gets hot in the summer, hot enough that going outside for more than an hour during the hottest months almost always causes her to pass out in a puddle of her own snow-sweat. The winters are muggy and it almost never snows, and Clarice loves snow. Why doesn't she move to somewhere with a cooler climate? Well one big reason is that a super cold climate wouldn't be great for her condition either. Her outer snow-fur will freeze into ice that makes movement painful for her if it's too cold. Another big reason? She was born in Surf Shore, and despite all its flaws (which she loves to complain about, constantly) it's her home.
She works as a librarian at Surf Shore's local library. This is partly because she needs a fully indoor job, but it's mostly because Clarice loves books. She loves to read, and more than anything she wanted to share this love with her town. As a sickly little kid she spent a lot of time indoors, exploring the world through the written word. She always dreamed of bringing this joy to others, whether that was through weekly story times for the kids or helping someone find the perfect book to read on the beach.
But the job quickly turned from a dream into a nightmare when Clarice was tasked with tackling the library's biggest problem: book return rates. Surf Shore Library has one of the lowest book return rates in the state, largely due to tourists checking out books at the library to read at the beach. The books get lost in the ocean, buried in the sand, left in hotel rooms, or even taken back home in suitcases. It drives Clarice absolutely crazy, but she's not allowed to stop checking out books to tourists. The worst moments are when residents of the town come in to check out a specific book she knows is probably never being returned. More than a few times she's dipped into her own salary to replace lost books she especially loves.
One of many Johnston siblings, she grew up in the town with her two fathers Peaches and Bartholomew Johnston and her three siblings. Bartholomew was a former ship builder and current stay at home dad, while Peaches ran (and still to this day runs) the local seaside ice cream parlor: Peach's Creamery. Delilah was the baby of the family with three older brothers, but she's always been closest to Foxtrot, or as she called him as a kid, "Freddy". Despite being a few years older than her, Foxtrot never felt like her superior, but a peer and more than that a friend. The two spent many days and nights watching scary movies, eating junk food, and playing video games they were too young to buy. Del admired her brother, and when he started dressing in a more emo style during high school she was quick to adopt the same look. She got deeper into the subculture than Foxtrot ever did though, and more than that she started developing a fascination with the macabre and death itself. Foxtrot never thought much about it even when their fathers started getting a little worried.
Her fascination with darkness and death had an abrupt and terrifying ending when she had her own brush with mortality. During the early days of her job as a boat mechanic, she made a wrong move that ended up with her getting a rope tangled around her ankle and then falling into the ocean behind a speeding yacht, with the rope still attached to the vessel. If one of the crew hadn't untied the rope quick enough, her foot would have been ripped off and she would have either drowned or bled to death before anyone could reach her. Luckily the crew of the Dynasty acted quickly, and none of that happened. What did happen was a shivering, terrified Delilah was pulled out of the water by her equally terrified brother Foxtrot.
She came out of the whole thing with nothing worse than a rope burn scar and a twisted ankle physically, but mentally she was never the same. She gave up her obsession with death, but kept some of her goth clothes and jewelry, at least the ones that still fit. Now she redirects her interests into throwing the biggest, spookiest (but still kid friendly!) Halloween block parties. And...maybe once a year she still indulges in the more macabre sides of her interest by helping out with the local haunted house. But ultimately her main goal is for everyone to have fun, not to scare people so bad they assault one of the actors and run away crying. That's not fun for anyone and she definitely never laughed at her friends for doing that in the past, no sir....
Her relationship with Foxtrot after the accident was...different. Foxtrot felt awful and partially responsible, both because he was there and because he'd indulged Delilah's darker sense of humor, laughing at jokes that maybe he shouldn't have. After nearly losing his sister right in front of his eyes, remembering her jokes about walking into traffic blindfolded or skydiving with no parachute made him want to be sick, not laugh like he had when she'd said them. Delilah is kinda frustrated with Foxtrot's whole illusive attitude after the whole thing. She wishes he'd just get over his weird guilt complex and talk it out, but he doesn't even know where to start. So there remains this kind of ...distance between them.
As mentioned, Del works as a boat mechanic! She's a free agent, working on all kinds of boats fixing every issue you could imagine. She can fix non-floating objects too! If you got a job that needs done, call this kitty and she'll have it done in two twitches of a cat's tail! She's probably come over to fix stuff Sunny broke at the Sunny & Carrie beach house many times.
He works as a deckhand on the luxury yacht Dynasty, which serves the tourists who visit Surf Shore and want a little luxury. He might not necessarily be service, but he still loves to entertain the guests with his jokes, funny anecdotes, and window washing dances. The worst part of the job in his opinion would be his bosun (leader of the deck crew): bratty deer-cactus Marshall Cactaca, cousin of none other Carrie Cactaca. I'll introduce Marshall very soon, all you need to know is Foxtrot thinks he's the worst person he's ever met and Marshall thinks he's a lazy showboat with a screw lose. They hate each other!
Definitely indulges in the party lifestyle that comes with working on a yacht, and, other than Marshall, the members of his crew also become his close friends. Most of them only stay a season or two, so he likes to spend every moment with them to the fullest, working hard and partying even harder.
Foxtrot is an EXPERT in UFOlogy. He knows everything there is to know about aliens and he's hosted panels at ShoreCon with dozens of attendees eager to hear his latest theories. His greatest wish is to meet a real life alien...spoiler warning: he does. It's not at all how he expected it.
In addition to UFOs and aliens, Foxtrot believes in all kinds of conspiracy theories and folk legends. From Bigfoot to secret government experiments to create mega-monsters, Foxtrot believes it, and he knows enough about it to tell you why you're wrong about it.
Close friends with Sunny Sockeye, who is also obsessed with aliens. The two probably host some weird "Keep Surf City Weird" podcast that absolutely nobody listens to.
Probably the closest to his dads out of him and his three siblings. Even as an adult after a long, particularly stressful week, he's likely to go home to his dads for a night for some love and R&R. Peaches will always bake him fresh cookies and Bartholomew and him love to watch old monster movies together.
