His childhood friend Sera convinced him and Mara to join them to wipe out a bandit camp to lure out their leader. He did show up, and while Jake tried to defend Sera while she was preparing a big spell, beat Jake close to death - leaving him with the hallmark cut on the left side of his face. Mara broke down in terror and hid, and Sera failed to defeat the bandit leader after her spell was interrupted, getting killed in the process.
The bandit leader left the other two alive, telling them to live on and not fall into the cycle of revenge as he, his father, and Sera's bloodline did.
Jake later cremated Sera's remains, keeping the ashes with him until finding a proper place for them.

AND I WILL PERSONALLY TORTURE THEM UNTIL THEY BEG FOR DEATH FOR KILLING OFF A LADY LIKE HER.

Apologies. Got way too in-character there. Basically, it's my feelings regarding how the bandit just killed such an attractive lady you made and basically gave Cruel Mercy to Jake and Mara, leaving them traumatized.

I can't just let him think he won like this. My inner feelings basically came out, and I basically now harbor a hate towards that Bandit Leader.
