Adi wants to be the most powerful being in the world and to do so means getting his paws on the High Church's prised artefact: the Yaindar. The artefact can grant him whatever he asks for and its interpretation of what Adi sees as 'powerful' leads to some interesting results. Transformed into a dragon, he soon learns with the help of a new friend that he may not be a typical dragon, but he may be what dragons are destined to become.

So, Adi had this image in his head of what dragons should be: powerful creatures that struck fear in mortals and sat atop hoards of gold. I figured this was mostly from stories he'd read. Dragons in his 'real world' are actually just intelligent, talking animals like all the anthros in that world, and not particularly powerful.
However, the Yaindar took his request and his understanding of what dragons are to create a new kind of dragon, like the ones he'd read about in books, and that was what he became.
I'm not a big believer in free will in real life and like to emphasise how at the mercy of our instincts we are, so I portrayed him as gaining these new instincts and being at the mercy of them like he was with his raccoon instincts before. Poor Areque was mostly just swept up along with Adi, who as a dragon was quite charismatic. He didn't really do any killing himself and just followed Adi.
