Man, being a peasant, rather than a landowner would be pretty terrible honestly, you have very little if no rights, you might very well be a serf, and assuming it’s in a feudal system, you can get trampled upon easily by those who owned the estate. Now being a rural farmer where you have your own rights in the frontier setting or otherwise? That is what I would prefer. By the way, is Nathan without rights in this type of situation or is the term peasant being used rather loosely?
I’m listening does he at least know how to read? And literacy was very uncommon for the common person until about the 16 and 1700s and even then I think only around half the population knew how to read. In fact, I think it wasn’t until Victorian times where the majority of the population knew how to read in some capacity. Even for a peasant, this kind of knowledge would be helpful because I remember hearing stories that people would take advantage of illiterate individuals by conning them, and telling them that certain measurements and contracts said something else than what they actually did.
Then I very much pity this guy, because not only is knowledge power, but he must despair at the fact that he can no longer read whatever his favorite books would’ve been. I guess I could imagine a comedic drama centering around him, trying to get someone to help him to relearn how to read and having to hide these lessons from whoever forcibly made them a peasant. Does he at least remember his former life?
