Pop had woken him up by sitting on the edge of David’s cot in the kitchen, close to the wood stove, and he’d placed a warm cup of coffee into David’s hand, fragrant and bitter. And it tasted awful, but it was David’s first-ever sip of the dark nasty stuff that Pop downed every morning."
