Just as we finished eating, the music I was streaming from my cellphone began to play an absolutely beautiful song. I could see that she wasn't eating as much now. She would twist a piece of potato and twirl it on her plate. Every now and again, Elaine would glance up from her plate... although it was a little less frequent now. Her big, beautiful purple eyes would glimmer in the moonlit night. Her dress was absolutely gorgeous as the light shimmered and sparkled off it. The smile I had on all night never once left my face. Against all odds, against the government and against her own wishes... she was here with me right now. I never dreamed this possible.
We talked a little more about what she planned on doing after school was out. She wasn't sure. With all the pressure mounting from her family to get married, she almost felt walled-in. Elaine wasn't against marriage, actually quite the opposite. She wanted to wait for the right time, for the right guy. She stood up and walked a little out into the grass. The fireflies seemed to almost gather around her, or perhaps it was just my imagination. When I stood up, she walked back over to the table and leaned against it. She asked about me, about what I thought about marriage. I told her I'd just be repeating the same lines back to her. I'd want someone who's loyal to me, one who I see a long future with. I'm not one to just pick up anybody... it never worked out for me before.
Then, a wonderful melody began to play. Seeing her leaning against that table with the fireflies all around... the view was perfect. The perfect girl and the perfect date. I can't tell her that, though. We didn't set out to be on a date tonight, but it sure ended up that way. I don't know how hard her heart is beating right now, but mine's just about to rip through my chest. If I were to let this moment pass me up, I would regret it the rest of my life. I can only pray that she feels the same way I do at this moment. So I reach my hand out to her...
I may be a hopeless romantic, but I am hopeful I can find someone to share a moment like this picture someday.
