In this alternate universe, the Bite of 83 never happened and so Evan Afton never died. However, he retained his fear of animatronics and he kept being bullied by Michael and his friends, as well as the kids at school. As such, Evan never had any friends.
In the summer of 1987, Michael and his friends started hanging out at the new and improved Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. But since he had to babysit Evan, he was forced to bring him along, much to Evan's dismay. Not wanting to deal with Evan's crying or whining, they decided to lock him in Parts and Service.
As it so happened, Mangle was in there at the time and, following her programming, she did her utmost to comfort the eight-year-old. Although initially terrified of her, Evan gradually grew more comfortable with her as the hours passed.
In the following days, whenever Michael brought Evan with him to Freddy's, the eight-year-old would seek out and spend all of his time there with Mangle. Evan came to see her as his only friend, and Mangle felt much the same way towards him, as he was the only child who treated her like a real friend rather than a toy to be pulled apart and put back together.
After Mangle bit Jeremy Fitzgerald, Evan snuck her home with him so that she wouldn't get scrapped. Although she ended up mauling Michael upon witnessing him hurting Evan, William let the boy keep her provided that she was kept out of sight. As such, Mangle would live in the barn that had once served as William's workshop, and he would teach Evan the skills necessary to maintain her.
Evan would spend practically all of his free time with Mangle from then on.
