Katt vs Dogg books and characters by Jimmy Patterson and Chris Grabenstein.
Oscar woke up in the morning, and upon remembering this was a special day, he jumped on the bed. It was his favorite thing! Then, he walked up to the mirror and groomed the fur of his head with his slobber. It was his favorite thing! When he heard his mother Lola calling him for breakfast, he rushed toward the dining room, where his family was waiting for him. On the table, he found a plate of scrambled eggs with bacon, a sausage link and mini pancakes topped with peanut butter! It was his favorite thing!
“Good morning, sweetie.” His mother said.
“Good morning, mom.” Oscar said.
Oscar’s tail was wagging really fast.
“You look really happy.” Oscar’s mother said.
“It’s just I had a furtastic dream!”
“Really?” his father asked. “What did you dream, son? Were you chasing a nasty katt up to a tree?”
“Well, not exactly.” Oscar said. “I was running beside that katt, not after her. And it wasn’t just any katt. It was Molly! Plus, there weren’t any trees. There was an open field covered with flowers and there were butterflies fluttering around!”
Yes, Oscar might have had a lot of favorite things, but hanging out with his best friend Molly the katt was his favorite, favorite thing!
“Ew, that dream doesn’t sound typical of a true dogg!” Oscar’s father said.
“Duke.” Oscar’s mother said. “Remember that we don’t hate katts anymore. Not since your father Max and Theodosia Hissleton got married. Our nephew Romaldo married Violet Hissleton, too. Thus, our rivalry between katts and doggs has ended.”
“Oh, you’re right, Lola. Sorry. Dogg instinct.”
“Lola, don’t use your phone in the table.” Oscar’s mother said.
“Ugh, excuse me, mom!” Oscar’s sister, Fifi, said. “I’m, like, checking my Facewoof here. OMG, Big Time Ruff are making a comeback! It’s my favorite band!”
“Really?” Oscar said. “I thought The Beagles were your favorites.”
“Well, yeah! But after Big Time Ruff went separate ways. And now, they’re finally returning for this summer!”
Oscar’s sister let out a loud squeal, then put away her phone with a big smile on her face.
“All right, mom. I’m, like, totally ready to enjoy my breakfast now.”
“Wow.” Oscar thought. “Her favorite boy bands really get her on the mood for food.”
Suddenly, Oscar remembered something he was about to announce his family.
“Oh, by the way, I’m really, really excited because today I’m going to visit Molly at her home!”
“What!?” Oscar’s father and sister said in unison.
“Yes! Molly managed to talk her parents and brother into letting me visit them! And I’m really happy about it That explains the rapid wagging of my tail.”
Oscar’s father was about to complain, but his wife intervened and said:
“Come on, Duke. This can be the perfect chance for the Hissletons to know our family better and gain trust in us.”
Oscar’s father thought for a second, and reluctantly agreed.
“Alright, son.” Oscar said. “Go and have fun with your katt friend. But please be careful. Remember I and your mother love you. And for us, to watch you going into an unknown territory is like watching a bunny wander into a group of coyotes.”
“Don’t worry, dad.” Oscar said. “I’ll be just fine.”
“Well, if Oscar wants to go to the house of those prissy, cheesy katts, it’s his problem.” Oscar’s sister said.
“Show some respect, Fifi.” Oscar’s mother said. “Oscar, go take a bath, dress up, brush your teeth and get ready to visit Molly.”
“Okay, mom! Thank you!” Oscar said, giving his mother a big hug.
Then, Oscar headed to the bathroom to take a bath. Once he finished, he put on the clothes that he knew Molly liked the most. He washed his teeth with puppy mint bark toothpaste and prepared to head off to Kattsburg, where Molly lived, not without before giving his parents a goodbye kiss on the cheek.
“Are you sure you don’t want us to take you there, son?”
“No, dad.” Oscar said. “I know you’re still a little jumpy about katts, so I don’t want you to bother taking me to Kattsburg. That’s why I’m taking the bus.”
Oscar’s dad shed a tear and looked at his wife.
“Our little puppy is growing up…”
“I know… Here are some coins for the bus, Oscar.”
“Don’t worry, mom. I’ve got my Dogg Scout bus pass.”
“Then, have a couple of your favorite meatloaf sandwiches, with cheese and peanut butter.”
“Wow! Thank you, mom!” Oscar said. “Oh, the bus is coming. Goodbye, mom! Goodbye, dad! Goodbye, Fifi!”
“Bye, son! Take care!” Oscar’s mom said.
“Bye, Oscar! Be careful!” Oscar’s dad said.
“Good luck, little bro! You’re going to need it.” Fifi said.
Oscar went outside to wait for the bus. He was a bit nervous that it was going to be his first time going to a trip without his parents and sister. However, he was growing up. He had to learn to take care of himself. At that moment, the bus arrived. Its gates opened and, Oscar got inside.
“Where ya going, kiddo?” the bus driver monkey asked.
“Kattsburg, sir.” Oscar answered, showing his Dogg Scout bus pass.
The driver arched an eyebrow.
“Kattsburg?” he said. “But you’re a dogg!”
“Hey, I’m not just any dogg. I’m the one dogg who helped Molly Hissleton return home when both of us got lost in the forest. Besides, I’m a Montahugh! The Hissletons and the Montahughs are now united by two marriages. And now, the Hissletons have invited me over to their home.”
“Oh, really? Alright then.”
The bus exited Doggsylvania and took Oscar toward Kattsburgh. He was nervous, yet excited at the same time. It was his first time visiting Molly at her home! What surprises were awaiting him?
