________
When it comes to the life and times of Orwan Botene, being one of the most well known explorers and writers in Kevica, it is hard to not overstate his strange and humble beginnings, his stranger companions, and his strangest connections. Orwan was born several decades after the Kerkian conquests of Duhmland, coming from a wealthy family he set out for his first adventure with a mercenary company in Cousland, fighting off Fearum raiders coming out of the Autumn Reich. He was captured briefly, but his descriptive tales of his capture would earn him his first bit of fame, his work being gobbled up by Kerkian scribes, Oturan nobles, and even was a popular read amongst the Leadership’s Blackguard. From then on, Orwan set on a dream of making a chronicle of traveling to the ‘four corners’ of Kevica, writing on its peoples and wildlife.
Orwan of course did not go alone, accompanied by a paid Oturan mercenary from Nurowald, a Fish Whacker. Tupan was an indentured servant due to absurd debts associated with most Oturan from the city, whose company sold his contract to Orwan, and became his bodyguard. The two set out for southern Kerkia, visiting and being nearly killed by a huge array of clans. Of their adventures, Orwan and Tupan had visited and tried to map the Black Forest, but after an encounter with ‘something left unsaid’, the two continued onto southern Kerkia via boat, shipwrecking on Sandshield Isle, a massive sandbar which stretched across southern Kerkia. Tupan saved the group by stealing a ship, taking them across the waters to the Southern Republics.
Orwan’s stay in human lands was a tedious and ill remembered misadventure, getting accidently caught up in one of the many disputes of the Curdans. Orwan was present during the infamous coup of the empire from the Curias, having played an odd role when he and Tupan helped smuggle a young Ansgar Curia, the last surviving Curia in the empire, to safety. This act alone would lead Orwan to be hunted during a long a difficult chase to Rosarug, where he was treated with honors and pleasures by Patrons who were tied to his rich family, but who mistreated Tupan who was more than once accidentally enslaved or nearly dragged to a much worse fate. Orwan’s good graces in Rosarug did not last long when he again was chased out due to having played an active role in aiding slaves escape their masters in Cusnova. Orwan also got a rare and important interview with Pompus Rosmardius, who had briefly captured and let the two go into Beastfolk lands when he discovered the two were Illuminated.
Orwan’s greatest travels were in the Beastfolk north, being a recorder of various political schemes and developments, which Orwan insisted to be more involved in despite his companion’s harsh and growing animosity towards it. The two would meet and travel with various fellow adventurers in those lands, such as the Pendland Dwarf, Robuc Marblepick. Orwan was said to dramatically and briefly separate from Tupan after a falling out, but after being betrayed by Ratik pirates, Tupan had a change of heart and rescued him despite losing a leg in their escape. Their freedom did not last for long, before both were captured again by North Curdan pirates who took them to Nor Curndia, with Orwan having to convince the raider captain to spare Tupan’s life.
While in Nor Curndia, the two were captives up until they aided the Tsar in helping to map and record some of the less known regions. The two, doomed at first to spend the rest of their lives as prisoners of the Northmen, were eventually involved in a struggle of aiding the heroes Helna Curia and Valux. The two, risking life and limb for their success, were eventually rewarded for their services by the Tsar, granting them not only their freedom but a massive sum of wealth which allowed them to return to the Kerkian Empire in peace. Tupan would return to Nurowald and Orwan would return to his estate in Barwald to write his most famous and successful book The Four Corners of Kevica to critical acclaim and success.
Yet the story of the two did not stop there, feeling a steady bit of nostalgia, Orwan was said to seek out his companion in Nurowald. However, what he found there would depress him, Tupan having a large family but living destitute and practically homeless, due to his crippling injury. Despite his poor reception of the halfling, Orwan would make peace with his former bodyguard, paying off his family debt and giving him a large sum to go to southern Kerkia to settle, the two parting ways for good. Orwan and Tupan would die peacefully at the same time, their respective families being said to be on good terms to this day.

Orwan Botene & Tupan Brownstain, Last Explorers of Kevica
“I’ve been at each of the four corners of Kevica, from the tips of southern Kerkia as my feet felt the great sand gap with its looming mountains in the far off distance. I’ve been to the place where the Ratik landed, where Odo Curia dwelled, and escaped all manner of trouble in Cusnova. None of it compares to here, my feet warm by a cozy fire, and the swift Duhmland Breeze to cool me hot cocoa.” -Orwan Botene on his adventures
“Me young’uns ask sometimes if I’d have died for that fool creature, considering all the horrible curses I spoke to me in both public and private. Yet the answer will always be the same. By duty I am bound, and as a brother in the Light, I would go to the abyss and back for him.” -Tupan on Orwan
