Aw, shucks. I'm really glad you're still working on your stories, though, especially if that's what makes you happy! You are one of the few artists from which I learned how important it is to have a functional background for your world and characters, so it would really suck if you quit all that now. Glad that's not the case!
Well, the details are mostly random scribbles and brush strokes, and even so I rarely manage to pull that off wihout making it look like utter crap. So it's like 50% randomness, 40% luck and 10% everything else. If I tried doing something like that again, I'd surely fail.
For this stuff, I usually make a silhouette in black or the darkest tone of the base color, fill in the details with a brush of average 90% hardness, 85% opacity, 15% flow and 25% opacity jitter without polishing it too much, and finish off the glowy effects with an overlay. The simpler, the better.
