Sometimes when injured or the scent of blood and battle is particuarly strong, Dragons can devolve into a baser, feral creature. Devoid of any self-imposed illusions they revert to their true state- an apex predator; indiscriminate and ferocious.
Understandably most dragons go to great lengths to resist this part of their nature, and it takes many years of careful conditioning to achieve such a level of self-control. However, there are others who are either unwilling or deprived of the opportunity to learn how to master their instincts and become feral. Some, the most embittered or desperate, even embrace the fury within... and start down the brutal path of the Berserker.
In Dragon culture Berserks are regarded with a mixture of admiration, fear and revulsion. Berserks have faced and defeated a darker side of their nature that many dragons fear to acknowledge even exists, and are amongst the most skilled an dedicated warriors available- virtually immune to pain and fear and capable of fighting until the utter ruination of their physical forms. Contrasting this is their innate unpredictability and vulnerability to darker influences. Those who delve too deep into the revelry of slaughter have been responsible for no small amount of strife, and rogue berserks are believed to be indirectly responsible for the numerous purges initiated against Dragon kind.
