I was gonna say the same thing, having one side open would be way easier. I mean, aside from fur or scales getting bent the wrong way! Even if that never happens, the logistics of needing to be a few feet away to thread the tail into the hole would be really awkward, with a tall chair at a bar, like that.
I suppose having only one support for the backrest would make for lopsided support or uneven structural integrity.
