I know this scene is a rough one for a lot of readers, so I wanted to let you all know it's close to being over. I'm ready to be done with it, too, if only because Lasker takes forever to draw. I gave him a complex design since he's not in the comic a ton and I thought it would help him make an impact, but god am I sick of doing the flannel on his shirt.
For those of you who are mad the story "got political", this chapter is called "The Politics of Lonely" for a reason. Also, you're kind of missing the forest for the trees.

Yeah, I've interacted with people who were in these situations and in the majority of those circumstances they were shocked to be essentially informed that, "no, your circumstances weren't normal. That was fucked up what was done to you." It's a bitter, but freeing pill, to know that your circumstances as terrible as they were don't have to be the norm for life.
Sadly, this can be a difficult realization to have as there is a not insignificant amount of people who will likewise see an abusive family and rug sweep it, because their own home life was excellent and therefore all families must be or at least that all families must be as important as theirs.

He probably has power of some kind. Money, position, ect. Shitty people try to surround themselves with as many trappings of success and power as possible so that they can feel like their attitude is justified while also seeing the shield it creates around them as proof they are correct.
Is there any way to know how many more pages have transphobia in it? Or is it possible to put a warning in the title or description? This is a wonderful comic, I won't stop reading, but this kind of material is pretty triggering to me. If none of that's possible totally fine! I'll just peek in and skip if I have to.
I understand you have a lot of anger at this world, or perhaps you just get a kick out of "harming" people anonymously. But really, I'm very sorry for whatever happened to you to make you act this way. I hope you can get the help you need in order to find happiness and comfort within yourself instead of lashing out. I wonder what caused it, but it isn't my job to speculate on someone's clearly deteriorating mental health. I could just suggest you "touch grass" or say that your Dad didn't hug you enough. But that'd be counter productive. Instead I suggest looking into a good therapist, or perhaps working on journaling to help these angry feelings escape.
Either way, I wish you the life you deserve.
Either way, I wish you the life you deserve.
I'd say the appearance of Bad Dad's visage in the preview should serve as a content warning that some rough stuff is coming.
If you want to skip his text for these parts, I'm sure someone in the comments could give you a decent summary of anything you needed to know. You don't have to subject yourself to that~

Every time this comes out I get waves of anxiety knowing I have to put up with more bullshit. Why do I do this to myself? Oh that's right, because you're an amazing writer and artist....*sigh* the things I do for things I love...........I haven't murder fantasied this hard in forever! x_x
Im not defending. But...is this generational behavior, out of ignorance, refusal to learn with the times, pure hate, or all of the above? There are things that I will openly say "I dont understand" to but I wouldnt act like this. I mean, forgive me, im trying to write this in a way that I can get my point across without being offensive. Here... alil self disclosure. I am disabled with a service dog. For the sake of comment space and time, Ill just say, I walk funny and fall down. When i was walking my dog a woman stopped me and asked "Can I pray for you?" I was taken a back a little and said "sure" She then put her hand on my shoulder and said "Dear lord please help this person walk normally like the rest of us." Now...she had nothing but good intentions, but her ignorance to my individual normal self, made her sound like she was being discriminatory towards me. Do I choose to hate her? Thats kind of what I see ...here This duck is so out of touch...maybe he does "care" but his delivery is off. Just my opinion, trying to sort it out.
Could be a lot of things. Though normally this behavior happens cause one learns that it's normal or okay. Another reason is they can't really understand what a disabled person or any different circumstance is like, so they say things along the lines of "lol be normal like me", good or bad intentions
I think the difference in this is that the woman in your story had discriminatory language, but decent intentions. The guy in this clearly doesn't have good intentions. He has a 'live the way I live or get fucked' sort of mentality. Referring to the trans part as delusions and seeing the generous top surgery thing as 'feeding into them' and all that shows that he has no sympathy, just disdain for someone that went through that. It's not a "I wish you were better", just a "You are wrong and must be corrected", which have very different feelings and such behind them.
i see. thanks for the clarification. I want to reiterate that im not trying to offend anyone. Im just naive. Ive seen my share of mean, and it bothers me, but its very hard for me to understand being mean for the sake of being mean. I always try to ...not make an excuse...but assume it's based on ignorance.
I know you weren't trying to offend anyone, and I don't think you were. I think it was all down to "I don't know what to think about this, and I need a little clarification." And my thought is "You can feel compassionate for some people, hoping for the best, but only if they're trying from a good place. If they're just coming from a mean, or bad, or negative place, then it's not so good."
You can feel the seething. This is gonna end in violence . People like that are only like that for as long as they think someone won't fight back.
Can speak from experiences moment you show them they can't get away with it, that kinda bravos pisses away faster then water in a bucket full of holes. Or they take it to the grave.
One of those is coming.

I don't have a problem with the "politics" here, but I do just find the guy kind of comical at this point honestly.
"Oh he's an impatient grump. Oh he's a control freak. Oh he's really awful to his son. Oh he's really awful to everybody else he knows, too. Oh he's a lecher whose wife left him. Oh he's a massive transphobe. Oh he'd at best abandon his kid and at worst beat them if they were transgender."
It's just kinda how the layers keep stacking one after the other. People like this definitely exist, it's more just the way each shitty aspect of him is getting revealed all in a row one-by-one.

How much longer do we have to see this piece of filth run his ignorant, sh*t-spewing mouth?! The more Lasker talks, the more I wanna take that fork that Raeford's holding and stab out his last, remaining good eye! Nonstop pages of this asshole talking and not getting hit or even being told to shut up is just getting infuriating!! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the comic, but Lasker is becoming as irritating as an inflamed hemorrhoid, and I can't take him getting away with it any longer!!
Tough Love? Yeah, guess you could say that. Man, I hate to be the poor sap who pisses Lasker off.
Also in relation to the story getting political argument. I can understand why people complain about it. It seems nowadays simply just wanting to avoid political/divisive is becoming more frowned upon. It feels like you're being forced to pick a side at gunpoint, but both sides are holding the gun. Doesn't help that when people tell others they don't want to talk politics, the argument is usually "this isn't politics" or "everything is political", which nine times out of ten are just excuses to continue talking about politics when people are saying "no". Hell, talking about political/divisive topics has me basically traumatized because of how damn toxic people can be about it (regardless of your viewpoint).
That being said, I feel something like this is different since the political undertones are to illustrate a non-political point (if that makes sense). The political undertones with Lasker are not meant to convey an agenda, they're there to showcase how the character's despicable. It's political, but in an artistic/storytelling way as opposed to a propagandic way.
TL;DR I get why people are ups3et, but there's nothing to get riled up about. It's just there to show that Lasker's an asshole.

Look, dude, I love your stuff, your comics are great. But you're laying it on a bit too thick here, even for someone like me who hammers in home character traits in his own work, but this is just... Overkill. Especially for a character that, at least I presume, only appears in this chapter and serves to flesh out Raeford's daddy issues. You've successfully made him the most strangle-able character ever.
damn, as a trans guy myself, these scenes are... whoof. i certainly hope some content warnings get added retroactively for this chapter at some point, because i have a decently high tolerance for transphobic language in the media i consume, and even with that, this is definitely not a comfortable read. i understand the importance of being frank about the fact that some people just act like this but it just does not feel great to jump into it with little to no expectation of exactly how bad its gonna get.
still a good comic, though!

"Didn't ask, don't care"
Well, no one asked about your opinion either, but here you are. And no one cares if you care or not. He gave his opinion right away, which I agree as well. But Antidev is the one making the story, so it's as long as he scripts it to be.
My point here? Stop using the "Who asked" Excuse to shut up someone just because you have no argument to defend yourself.

This is a legitimate attempt from me, so pay attention.
The first poster in this thread was being inflammatory and rude. I told him to knock it off. It's 100% irrelevant whether anyone, you or otherwise, agree with him. Don't be a dipshit about it.
It doesn't help I find you making unrelated rhetorical nothings below, too. Your opinions are bad and you should feel bad.

Good. I can agree him being so direct was unnecesary. But really, I hate when I see the "who asked" or similar because people simply use it to shut up someone, mostly when they can't talk back and to look better on people's eyes.
And sorry, but if you are doing the same thing, how are you supposed to tell me to shut up? Or you think I didn't saw that "Go to hell" elaborated comment? Kind of unnecesary comment as well, if you tell me.
Tell me to feel bad about my comment? Did I threaten you or anyone? Did I insult you in any bad way? Are you serious?

All the folks saying, "I can't want till Wilson punches him!"?
Lasker is missing an eye for a reason. And I don't think he lost it by "accident." You don't get to be that much and that big of an asshole without being able to back it up.
And here he is, talking about "corrective rape"?
Maaaaan, that is some serious assholery. But here's the thing? Lasker gives me the vibe of someone who will absolutely fuck your shit up, and won't even worry about the cops.
Tread carefully, Wilson.

They must need that money really bad if our duck's swallowing all this stuff that he wants to say. All the way back at the beginning, them asking if his dad could slip them a few bucks to make it past rent...he's swallowing it down for their sake, hoping to keep things going, so he doesn't have to go back to LIVING with this, I imagine.
With the cost of housing these days, it would take three minimum wage jobs between them to keep the rent going. Groceries for three people aren't cheap in this day and age either.
Then again, I can already tell that we're going to disagree with things the way that you're talking about it. Shall we part ways on that here?

No thats called "being a European with a job".
Seriously, for years I had no idea how toxic and how lame the furry community is. You are like those loosers who tried to cancel Rowling.
I never get "obliterated", I simply have limited time to deal with unrelevant shit like an internet website where I used to post images.

"Privileged". So what does "privileged" mean for your kind? And what do you think gives you authority over me to make me shut up? I assume yu are lacking certain qualifications for that. What does "arrogant" mean - "truth", "realism" I guess. Gods your pathetic. I guess you never earned a living on your own neither.
Again, for all those long term students and whatevers: Three grown up, able men. At least one having a college degree and works in IT. But they all struggle to pay rent, pay their month, and have to beg their parents for money. MAYBE the reason is we see them at home during the day?
A: One works food business, one works a gig-job, and the other is self-employed and is trying to get paid for the work that they're doing.
B: Elkin is trans, and the amount of self-harm that can occur from repressing that side of oneself in a number of retail and other jobs in some parts of the country is really bad.
C: The job market is perpetually trying to undercut and underpay people within it. If a job can get away with paying you less than it should, then it will, and you have to have something to push back with to get that rate per hour up again, or more hours. Most people outside of union jobs don't have this, and most unions have become painfully toothless.
D: Education requires resources, and you aren't going to be making even as much as you were previously while trying to get accredited.
There's a lot of things that stand in the way, and the moment that he said that he was a 'European with a job', it was clear that he was speaking from a different background. Just as you likely are. In my experience, I've seen three people living in a 2-person apartment, each one struggling to get better jobs, but never able to get more than 20 hours of work per job because every employer wants to schedule people for minimum hours to avoid benefits.
It isn't laziness. Not always.

You're right in everything you said save for 2 things:
It seems weird how someone like Raeford couldn't get a better job considering that it's likely he went to college, but we still need to see what happened for him to be 29 and still working on Nerd Bird.
About my background, when I said I talked from experience, I also meant that I'm one of those people who still live with their parents because they can't afford housing due to not having proper jobs, I have some money saved, but if I decide to rent a place, said money won't last(even if it's a lot) unless I get a proper job, that's what I meant when I said I talked from experience.

I apologize for my assumption regarding your situation; that was uncalled for.
With Raeford, I think that he might be in the situation that he's in because he can't see himself getting to that other situation at the moment (broken down by his father, etc.) and Elkin said back at the start that Raeford used to be far worse. He might be in this situation because he honestly has been beaten down to that extent, and the most that he could do was get himself out of it with friends that he might be able to recover with.

It's ok.
Yeah, considering what Elkin said and Lasker mentioning that Raeford said he got to make his own hours, my guess is that he used to work for a company or someone who overworked him, he couldn't take it anymore, he quit and that's why he ended up working on Nerd Bird, but that's just speculation of mine, we'll have to wait to see what lead him on to end up in his current situation.

I hope you don't mind me throwing my two cents in but it seems like ppl forgot that Raeford /has/ been working hard, which is why he was sleeping in the middle of the day, talks about feeling rundown and exhausted and has eyebags. The work is just tedious because of the nature of helping older ppl with electronics is just usually like that. Tedious.
Alternatively who says app based work like nerd bird isn't meant for a 29 year old? Who is it meant for then? All the app based work I can think of(i.e. uber, lyft & rover to name a few) has plenty of people over the age of 30 working it. Are they failures?Besides that his current job is literally essential to the plot we've seen unfold so far.
Maybe it's not ideal, but it also feels insulting to anyone who makes a living with these occupations in the same way people insinuate flipping burgers is lesser work. Whose deciding what work is worthwhile?
Also I must mention bc it's extremely relevant that minimum wage has BARELY been raised while the cost of living has skyrocketed. It's easy to google yourself and see the math but minimum wage is not a livable wage! Since 1980 to 2022 cost of living has gone up over 250% while minimum wage wasn't raised accordingly, that is the main reason people aren't able to afford a place of their own--no matter how hard or how many hours they are working. Many of my friends are working 2 or 3 jobs and still struggling and it has nothing to do with the quality of their jobs and everything to do with our economy and exploitative employers. (Not to mention other nuanced things like a good pair of work boots might cost 60-100 and last you years while a pair around 20-30 will only last you a season but it's all you can afford right now and you cant very well go about barefoot, things like that can keep you poor forever you know? Cheap goods that don't last)
To me it seems they are all working hard and Raeford in particular is overworking himself(I wouldn't be shocked if we find out after this he actually has a second job working a graveyard shift or something) just to try and get ends to meet. At least that's the impression I got.
We also don't know if Raeford asks for the money or if it's just given to him obligatory, it might be one of the few ways Lasker maintains control and a sense of superiority over his son, waving money in his face that he desperately needs and then looking down on him after.(which is a fucked up insincere way to be 'generous' obvs)
Sorry if this was a tedious read itself. I didn't expect to write so much. I just like to give people the benefit of the doubt and try to not make bad faith interpretations.

I can't remember all the way back, but it seemed like they weren't all fully employed either. Like dad is clearly written to be a horrible bigot and terrible person, but there is an element of the main character and the three of them mooching off of his dad as grown ups. There is a point when someone else is paying your bills when you lose a bit of the ability to say "STAY OUT OF MY LIFE/Don't tell me how to live!" when you are also telling them "I'm unable to take care of myself like an adult should be able to and need your money to stay afloat". I'm kind of waiting for the point in the comic where he lectures dad about his life and they finally do the "cutting him off" because frankly he should, and it'd be best for him to get out of his father's very terrible shadow (tho I do feel like antidev is beating us over the head with the dialogue a bit to really make sure everyone knows dad is a baddie lol)
Elkin is an animator, self-employed from the looks of it, that has been waiting for a paycheck for two weeks. The other guy works at a fast-food place, probably as a night-shift employee from how they're talking, and Raeford is a gig worker.

I wouldn't call it mooching off the dad - and Raeford is definitely taking a beating for it - but you're right, there's only so much you can say when you have to swallow it all and make it work for the sake of other people.

Ah so they are underemployed, thanks for the refs. The one panel also kinda reads "Dad has bailed us out before" followed by "Dad usually slips me money" plus whatever he makes on his gig to make the rent...which again, i'm not condoning the dads awful behavior, but if he's tolerating it to get money from him, that also makes Raeford pretty crappy too (plus accepting money from parents is a trap, it can end up being used like an anchor or string to be used to hang you with).
Obviously we can only go page by page on what the artists posts, but there is an element of "if you dislike him that much, and find his views so hurtful and offensive to yourself and your friends...but continue to utilize him for his money instead of you and your two adult friends figuring out some other solution...that's a choice you are making" (albeit a poor one). I'm curious to see where the artist goes with it.

I agree with the choice on this, unfortunately. It's something that's been pulled together in a sort of trap for Raeford in a big way; he's reliant on it and he has to hate himself for what he does, but without the money, they'd have to push themselves harder - and perhaps harder than they currently can - back at the other place. And maybe Raeford might be able to get a place of his own somewhere, but I feel like he's here, with Elkin and the others, because with them, he is recovering bit by bit. On his own, I think he might fall pretty hard.
I'm cis-het. I had cancer, three times. I had extensive surgery and damage to my chest - one of which looked like a giant belly button instead of a boob after I tried to go septic and nearly died of an overwhelming infection. I had body dysmorphia.
I felt butchered. I didn't like what I saw in the mirror, and it caused depression.
I accepted it as a temporary step towards a permanent solution, keep going, and after plastic surgery I look like myself again. The brain needs to see it to know you're whole again. Yes I know parts are gone, others are fake, but my brain thinks I'm all here and I look like who I should look like.
But trans individuals who can't get surgery, they are stuck where I was long term.
So body dysmorphia isn't a delusion. This is entirely true for transgender individuals that look in the mirror and the body reflected back doesn't match the mind.
Lasker is a bigot and a very shallow one. And yet he parades his ignorance. He has no idea what Elkin went through.

No honestly officer, the mad man leapt from behind our booth, grabbed my hand with my knife in it, stabbed him repeatedly in the face until he was dead, Unzipped my pants and pulled my dick out to urinate over his dead corpse before he fled the scene in a car i can only describe as, with four wheels. God's honest truth.
Sorry what? You are saying you would murder someone for being an asshole. Then you would have to make genocide to a good part of the population. The guy is bitter as fuck, but so far, I think he didn't commit any crime against humanity. And no, being born isn't either.
Everyone in the comments advocating violence because of words. It's a shame really, different people see the world in different ways and have different opinions, and there are people who want to hurt them because they think a certain way. As far as adults they can make choices of what to do with their bodies, and that's their choice. And no matter what choice you make there will be someone in the world who will disagree with you. Each person has a different perspective of the world around them, and each person has a different perspective of each other. Some would say all his opinions are wrong, and some others would say most of his opinions are wrong and he's just a broken clock who's right twice a day. I doubt there's many on this site who would say that all of his opinions are right, but there's no reason someone's opinion should result in someone else throwing the first punch. There's a couple things he said that I agree with, but he is rude about how he says them. He talks about respect but shows none to others, which is just hypocritical. And while puberty blockers can give children heart conditions, adults can do whatever the hell with their bodies they want. Some parents do corrupt the minds of their children, and some kids who are encouraged into trans lifestyles by their teachers do end up killing themselves. Really adults will do what they want to do because they can, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop them. And if an adult is happy with their life after switching genders, let them be happy. There's some truth to the father's opinions, but he should still treat others with respect. Whether he believes the kid has been corrupted or not, it costs him $0 to be nice to them. The number one rule of making conversation with others is to try not to piss them off, even if you disagree with them you don't have to force your own opinion on them. Rather than punching him I would just try to avoid him as much as possible. When not possible I would just make an effort to talk about something else with them, maybe something we can agree on. People do change over time, and it would be good in this comic to see his father at a later time realizing that there's a couple of things he's been wrong about and having to reevaluate. It would allow his character to be less static and more realistic as a person. Not that he'll suddenly be completely different and be singing rainbows or anything, just that he's a bit slower to change and set in his ways but not incapable of reason. It would be good not to see him as hopeless, but as someone difficult with his own problems with the world and problems with himself. So much of the anger that people have with the world comes from how much they dislike themselves, while some other anger is justifiable. It's so easy to aim your anger at someone rather than just accepting the fact that changes happen in the world and civilization naturally. He doesn't seem to be mad at the person who became trans, but rather at those who convinced them it was a good idea. He does seem to care about what happens to the kids, even if he wasn't good at taking care of his own. Maybe he's aware of that and is too proud to admit it and hides behind other people's opinions, or maybe he really is just clueless of his own flaws. I don't know, I'm posting this at like midnight and I'm not going to check back here for comments to argue with. I'm just throwing this out there to say don't hate on the guy, if you disagree with him just move on. If you want to point out how he's wrong then point out which things are Incorrect and use some facts to backup your argument and then move on with your life. No reason to get emotional about this when you can just let it wash off you like water off a duck's back. I try not to hate people and I encourage others to do the same. So if anyone responds to this comment with an angry response, I won't see it cuz I'm not coming back to this. I'm throwing this out there to encourage people not to be violent and not to be angry and to encourage you to think and after I post this I'll move on with my life. Have a good night or good morning if you view this post late. Adios.
I was about to write something down to try to analiyze his personality, but he wrote something much better.
Personally, what I see is someone whose attitude towards life has been down for a long time already. He's despicable at best, but he got something in his arguments that most people didn't get, which I include myself until I read what Saujen wrote. Possibly because I was in the mood of "We get it, he's an asshole. Can we move on?"
Like it or not, there are teachers and parents encouraging their children to "Find themselves" when they don't even know what they want to do in life. Hell, they haven't developed a proper consciousness yet and pushing adult topics into them won't make it happen sooner. It would get them scarred at worst.
Why do I say this? Because most humans, and animals, have matching gender and sex (male, man) (female, woman) since the moment they're born. Only a small part of the population (That's why it's called minority) have been born in a body that it's not theirs. It's an anomaly, like any other, but it's a matter that should be treated at the right time, and not forced into kids' minds.
Explaining them about it and telling them to explore themselves at such age won't make them more tolerant. A kid will behave like the people around them most of the time. It's only when they enter puberty when their minds become more open, that you can talk about these things, and yet you have to be careful of how you take it.
It's not the same thing saying "These people exist." than "These people exist, and maybe you could be one of them." Because now that their minds ar shaping, their identity and thinking do so as well, which makes them vulnerable. If they really are trans, by only knowing about them is enough for them to figure it out in the future. Why the need of pushing that question inside their minds?
I think this theme should be treated more carefully than the way it's being treated right now. We are not talking about liking people of the same sex than yours. We are talking about changing your body. A decision that will change your life... Forever.

Buddy, we live ina society where right now minorities are in the spotlight, and a part of that is because there are interests behind. Politicians, companies, investors, etc... They want to keep minorities at the top, to make them feel they matter to everyone, and anyone opposing them are worthy of hate.
I believe this position it's affecting them more that it should, and at some point it could go badly. Not only because some people don't like that their countries focus their attention on that and nothing else, but because a lot of people will say they're not against it or they don't care, so it doesn't affect them.
Me? When I first heard about it and they explained it to me, I was shocked at first, but who doesn't? We all have been taught there are two genres, and when we are born, ours is defined already. It's only later on when we discover this.
So no, buddy. My long explanation is not a way of saying I'm against it, I'm just trying to explain my opinion about it.
I think it should be treated as a normal, because it's a law of the universe that while there is a standard, there are also anomalies in everything. We humans are the only ones who can make it be part of the normal. But for that, we have to take it down from the pedestal, at least here in my country, and treat it like that.
Sadly, this is something that will take a long time. Or did women or black people get their rights right after their first walkout? And yet, there are some cultures and people that are against this, either by ignorance or development delay.

unfortunately it seems like he is reliant on the money his parent(s) gives him to survive because the IT job isn't quite cutting it. i can't remember if they just live in a small(ish) town or not, but he may have better luck finding a job in the same field that pays much better in the city.
Looking at this page again today, I can't believe I missed the saliva in Lasker's mouth. It's like he's become electrified by his own diatribe, causing him to froth at the mouth.
Your writing is nuts, it's so potent. And it's just as impacting as the illustrations. It almost looks and sounds like these characters require you to partially disappear. Kent Haruf or John Steinbeck comes to mind, or Andy Warhol. Have you read East of Eden? Hopefully you're trying to get this published outside of the community.
