This is Toothless. I got him for Christmas '10. My mother got him cause I love How to Train your Dragon and he reminded her of Toothless the Night Fury.
He is a Larval Tiger Salamander or Waterdog (kind of like a tadpole to a salamander). He is totally aquatic. The frills on his head are external gills. His favorite food are worms. He also eats small fish which I haven't gotten any for him yet cause my filter in his tank doesn't have a strainer to keep the fish from getting sucked up into it.
The people my mother got him from had very limited information. He was called "A Baby Dinosaur". The food was very small and I never saw him eat it. No where did it say what he was or that he was aquatic. He was in a Critter Keeper that was as long as he was. He is now living happily in a 10 gallon aquarium. He is smart for an Amphibian too. He knows when he is about to get fed and likes to look at you.

Correct. But a Axolotl and Water Dogs are different kind of salamander. Axolotls are the larval form Mexican salamanders and Toothless here is a larval form of a Tiger Salamander. And correct about the morphing. They need a "hormone" to morph into salamanders. I heard it causes a lot of stress on them and shortens there life span. Toothless. I plan on keeping him in this form. =D He is cuter in this stage.
