Baba is what's known as a Dandegryf, a unique species containing only one member. In the world of Eialm, a second pulse of power burst the ground open, exposing Ravillia's entire northern hemisphere to powerful ley energy, a natural energy few can harness without consequence. The area in which the energy burst open became known as the Wellspring, even after the hole was plugged to prevent direct access to the ley-lines beneath the ground. The wellspring continuously produces life in a chaotic whirl of life and death in its vicinity. New flowers, trees, bushes continuously sprout from the ground only to die minutes or even seconds later. Occasionally this chaotic energy creates a creature that isn't just a plant. Sometimes they are animal hybrids that unfortunately only live for a few minutes before rapidly aging and dying. One such being is Baba; but unlike other creatures, Baba got lucky and siphoned some vital life essence from a dragon that was present at the time of their creation. By doing so, Baba embedded the dragon's essence into their core, stabilizing their existence. In Baba's early years, they were a small puff ball of dandelion seeds with little wings and a long vine-like tail. Baba would be very... buoyant, capable of floating in the air with the only ability to control their flight being their small wings and the use of their tail as an anchor point.
Baba took very strongly to the dragons who saved their life and followed them into their lair. Luckily their endearing personality made Baba something the dragons wanted to keep around and study. Baba's proximity to the dragons allowed them to adapt and adopt many of the draconic habits displayed, while manifesting many of their own unique capabilities over time. Baba - like many of the ley-creatures born from the second pulse - was capable of harnessing energy from sunlight to provide themselves with nutrition but due to their relationship with dragons Baba also developed the capability of eating and digesting meat. Their spores can be sent out as 'feelers' to give and take life essence, which can be used to effectively rejuvenate themselves or another depending on the dandegryf's mood. Barely a year passed since Baba's creation and the dandegryph's intelligence took a huge leap after a fateful meeting with a particular being from another world named Musaamik. Though Musaamik, Baba learned how to speak through their thoughts, forming a communication bridge that was desperately needed for Baba to understand the world around themselves. Specifically, other sentient creatures. Baba's maturity proceeded to come at an alarming rate, their body growing and so did their capabilities in a relatively short time. More of their gryphon physiology became present in addition to strong ley energy abilities. It didn't take long for Baba to become something special.
The more Baba ventured into the world to discover themselves, the more they had an impact of their surroundings. However... Baba was born of a rather chaotic energy, so their nature wasn't as orderly as their draconic guardian's. Baba's capabilities lead to doing things in return for favors. Perhaps they would help a farmer increase to crop yields in exchange for an entire barrel of apples. Other times, Baba might sneak into a town and demand candy from a shopkeeper who would then suddenly find a valuable gem on their counter the following day. Baba's chaotic nature eventually attracted the attention of the people of Muir'Beinn and what the people eventually discovered was how truly special Baba was. Even in the dead of winter, life burst through the snow in Baba's steps, wilting plants perking up in Baba's vicinity. Rumors spread easily throughout the lands and legends began to circulate about this strange creature. Many even began to believe Baba was some type of forest spirit. Those with a keen connection to the ley-lines felt a strong pull towards Baba, making Baba an anomaly even to the most wise of shamans. The locals began to call Baba "Ràithe beò". The Living Season.
This is Baba, pride and joy and co-owned by
faluma and myself. This baby began life as a throwaway adoptable that
blackblueblaze gifted to me for free after giving her the idea of a 'dandelion creature'. Over the years, she has blossomed (pardon the pun) into an integral figure in our roleplay world and has been the catalyst for huge world changes that I have treasured. She deserves this recognition, and this reference sheet from Blackwing is one of her most beautiful she's ever made.
