Frankenstein/Straw Man syndrome means a character doesn't die so much as break. No messy blood or guts to interfere with your general audience rating either.
Initially it was planned that Key would literally be found in the fishing nets of the party as they traveled the Inner Sea.
He did appear later in a custom campaign carried by Sipahi on her back C-3P0 style. Embedded on the books cover was one of the main objectives of the campaign.
The idea was that the PCs could find his various parts, fix him up, and build-a-bunny who would learn all the magic item creation feats @ APL -2.
A bit of extra questing that would award them not only in adventure content, but freeing up feat slots for spellcasters.
These days Key is reimagined as an android named Tencee.
