From one end of the West Somerset Railway to the other, welcome to Minehead! Despite the English name, Minehead actually comes from the Welsh word for mountain - mynydd. The town most likely got its name because of that pretty big hill just south of the town, which is today known as North Hill. Having spent much of its history as a small trading and fishing port on the Bristol Channel, the town today is mostly a tourist destination these days, with a large Butlins holiday park nearby. Regrettably, decades of neglect have meant that the town is one of the worst in the UK for social mobility, but the people there are still friendly enough.
