Well, the hands are rarely protected and are one of the most sensible area of the human bodies. Getting hit in the respirator tends to make you breath or even eat a bit of the stuff (which is not toxic but not that great to eat). Another bad area to be hit is on the side of the ribs, as sometime they'll give some kind of plastron that cover the torso and the back, but has blind spot on the side, so you can get hit there, and it's quite painful...
