I love it! Reminds me of a thing I made in a play-by-post "god" game once.

I don't know what that is but hopefully it's a good memory!

The TL;DR: It's sort of like D&D, except you play by posting on a forum, and you play as one of several deities creating a world, rather than adventurers.

One type of animal my god-character made was "cloud dogs," who were highly intelligent canines sort of like a cross between "foo dogs"(/Chinese guardian lions) and samoyeds. Because they were separate from the cycle of life, their souls could be re-born into new bodies. A reborn cloud dog had the potential to remember everything they had learned from previous lives, and they were very loyal to their humanoid partners. ("Owner" is the wrong word; they were almost impossible to imprison against their will, so you had to treat one well if you wanted to keep it.)
