This is an All Tomorrows fan art, which is a work of science fiction and speculative evolution made by C. M. Kosemen. It explores a hypothetical future path of human evolution set from the near future to a billion years from the present. Several future posthuman species evolve through natural means and through genetic engineering, conducted by both humans themselves and by a mysterious and superior alien species called the Qu.

In the books story, after colonizing a big part or our arm of the galaxy, then encounter a malevolent and superior alien species called the Qu. The Qu's religion motivates them to remake the universe through genetic engineering. A short war follows in which humanity is defeated. The Qu bioengineer the surviving humans as punishment into a range of exotic forms, many of them unintelligent.

Many of these posthuman species would later evolve into new ones and regain their sapiences, and later would be able to contact the other posthumans and would form an alliance called the "Second Empire of Humanity", of wich many of the posthuman civilizations were made.
One of these species were the Killer Folk, a race which evolved from the predators created by the Qu trough mixing the DNA of humans and of felines and canines.

However, during this time, one race, known as the Ruin Haunters, eventually replaces their bodies with mechanical forms, now to be known as the Gravital. The Gravital colonize the rest of the galaxy while annihilating most life within it, including the other post-human species due the the fact that they always disdained their fellow post-humans due to them see only themselves as the legitimous heirs of a glorious past.
This fanart portrays a killer folk soldier of one of their nations, fighting the gravital invasion on their home planet. They were one of the few planets where a direct invasion was necessary by the gravital, with them being able to destroy partially the colossal solar sail which the gravital intended to use to block the sun of their planet.

This soldier, part of the marine corps of one of the killer folk nations, part of the 2nd Empire of course as well all the nations of their world, is using a equipment considered very basic for their standards, being one of one of their youngest soldiers and not yet having completed his full training. However, he volunteered to fight with the intent of giving time to evacuate of at least some civilians to hidden bunkers, and fully knowing he will make the ultimate sacrifice to give a small chance of survival to his people. Their planet is already darkned by the gravitals solar sail, even though they managed to partially destroy it.
