I'm curious to know, has anyone out there finished FF XIII, and if so how did you feel about yourself afterwords?

Ten had a great story once you got in a few hours... Ten-2... shouldn't exist. Pretty princess dressup, horribly designed if you're going for the 'perfect' game. If you play it without grinding, it can be SLIGHTLY enjoyable. 12... has no such excuse. HATE that one with several subscription's worth of passions :)
I'll pretend I know what you mean by that. XD
I didn't like 8 very much. I like 7 but it was ruined for me after the fan-boyism. But nine was largely hated, so no fan-boyism to ruin it. Plus it was very old-school FF so right there it won points with me. My biggest problem with nine was the stupid "learn everything from armor and weapons" bull.
Plus I'm old. The first Final Fantasy I ever played was literally the first Final Fantasy.

Nine was pretty decent. It wasn't perfect, but I liked it. IMHO, I think its biggest strength was also its biggest weakness: it was clearly an attempt to recapture the feel of 6 for the post-Sephiroth era. It did this well in some ways, tried a little too hard in others. I never got the impression that 9 was actively hated, but the old-school feel earned a 'meh' from the folks who first signed on to the franchise with 7, were tricked by 8's graphics engine (realism = brown, y'know) and were just waiting for 10 on the PS2. But, again, I could be wrong; I just always figured it was ignored as opposed to actively hated.
7 had its moments, but being the first one on the Playstation plus the then-new graphics style and all that brought in a different crowd than Final Fantasy had had up until that point. 9's a rare exception, but as a result of 7's success most of the games since then have been written for that "bigger badder summer blockbuster new weapons new vehicles" audience rather than the old-schoolers. So there were a lot of folks playing FF9 (their prior experience being limited to 7 and 8) who were like "Wait, wait, wait. Wait. The main character isn't a whiny heartless mercenary with a goofy-looking sword who writes his own slashfic with the game's villain? Fuck that noise."

lol right. Except nine was attempt to capture the swords and sorcery of the first five more-so than six. If you recall six was the major transition from a medieval world to an industrial revolution, and as such is a completely unique experience.
Honestly seven did nothing that six had not already done. It just had 3D slapped onto it (which for the brainless masses automatically makes for a better game because most modern gamers don't know their ass from a hole in the ground). Nonetheless seven was excellent. I just wish they hadn't gotten so carried away with it.
And yeah, apparently realistic graphics require brown everywhere. FF8 is one of the most boring looking games I have ever seen, and I played Inindo (again, I'm old)! Look at Zelda Twilight Princess. Brown upon brown upon brown upon bloom upon bloom upon bloom.

Well, true. The way I tend to compare 6 and 9 is in the way that individual character subplots seem to matter more than in a lot of the other games. I was thinking more character development arcs than overall setting. But no matter how you slice it 9 was kind of an attempt to take the pre-7 aesthetic and update it to the post-7 environment, system and market-wise. Think like the Dawn of the Dead remake. It didn't actually keep a lot of details of the original, and it was clearly written to appeal to the modern moviegoer rather than a zombie/horror aficionado, but it is still recognizably a movie about people trapped in a mall and there's zombies.
But 7 did one thing that 6 didn't... it came out on the Playstation. Which matters more than you'd think. It was the franchise's entry into the next generation of systems, where 3D started mattering. And because Square went with CDs over cartridges and a better-established system 7 reached not only a wider audience than it would have had with the N64 but a different audience altogether. Not only did moving to the PSX bring people over from the Nintendo days, but it also provided a visible entry point for Playstation owners who hadn't spent as much time with the Nintendo system.
I'm not arguing this made it better, but I'm just pointing out other reasons why it got so much attention. I guess the moral of the story is 'never underestimate good timing and placement in the marketplace.'

I'm well aware of all that. I'm speaking solely about the games themselves, not marketing or console.
Six was released on the playstation later on, but most people didn't give it the light of day because it was "old" or "2D". FF6 is clearly the masterpiece of the entire franchise and a lot of morons missed out because of their biased mentality.
6 would be more widely appreciated if more young folks were willing to look backwards. But then it might have been ruined by idiotic fanboyism... Catch 22 I suppose.

Woo! A fellow person who really liked FFX. I have honestly played every Final Fantasy so far and have liked every single one (even X-2, unless you are going for perfect like mentioned above). Each one has had something about the story that I have liked. I will admit FFXIII has flaws but I enjoyed playing it and liked the story (not so sure if I will find time or patience to get all the trophies mind you). If there is a FFXIII-2 coming then I look forward to it.
"I forgot we grew up together because we use espers."
Sorry, that is absolute bull. That's Michael Bay Plot right there.
Anything after 6 isn't worth being called a Final Fantasy, how about we label them Final Fantasy Legend 5 and beyond, cause let's face it Square for awhile just slapped final fantasy on anything.

12 i wanted to like, but it had 2 horrible things going... actually three 1 grinding to no end just to progress to a new area and survive there, other being vaan... he has nothing to do with the main story of the game, and the 3th is the main story as it halfway jumped ship on me and left me with no goal and everyone just started flailing around for no reason in other areas.
its not confusing of its well written second sight was that, this is confusing as someone decided to not give a rats ass about the story.

10-2 was good. The story was stupid at the start, and could have used them dropping the parody aspects, but you could tell they weren't taking themselves seriously. The battle engine, however, was freaking amazing. And after they started taking the plot a bit more seriously, its story wasn't half bad, either.
The Final Fantasy Tactics series has always been one of my favorite Tactical RPG series. Sure the Advanced series lost the serious story line (FFTA's story was stupid, and FFTA2's story was blissfully nonexistent), but I've always enjoyed the gameplay of the Tactics series. Even if FFTA nearly killed the fun in THAT with the Law system.
ffta's story line was stupid to begin with. "I have a shitty life so i think ill be happy in FFT land." then main protag guy with stupid hair: "NO YOUR CRIPPLE ASS IS GOIN HOME!"
The law system completely turned me off to the advanced series and i havent looked at any other FF game since. I loved playing FFt as a kid and to this day i still have my ps1 disc. A playstation network copy on my ps3 and the psp version.

I never said it wasn't stupid. FFTA2 is a lot better, with the laws simply being challenges. If you break them all you lose is a few bonuses and the ability to revive. Though, what they did to the MP system did do horrible things to the balance as soon as you start playing it any harder than casually.
Friend finished it just to say he could, and it doesn't improve at any point. Battle system was kinda neat, but nothing else was remotely good or worth having to sit through, and he feels robbed of his time. The ending makes as little sense as the game's miserable existence and the rest of the plot.
The dev team who worked on it said they decided to not have any towns in the game because "it's too hard and takes a long time to do," if I recall.

Oh I remember Zidane....man he was great. He was the only one who didn't act like a prick all the time. He's the only character from the playstation era FF not to be a total emo. Unlike Squall or Tidus, Zidane was more of a lovable character as far as my memory serves (it has been a very long time since i played that game).
I started playing 9 last October. Truly an overlooked masterpiece. But the fan boys hated it because it was based off the art style of original and had a non emo main character? :c Zidane was amazing because he was adventurous, happy, and confident, which contrasted his sadder moments and allowed them to be used for character building and not inane whining.
If I'm correct, Zidane makes a bet with the princess that if he wins a tournament she should go out on a date with the Black Mage character (I forgot his name).
Indeed FF9 is one of those games that get pushed aside because of their artstyle. Also FF9 had a great character cast, even when they were sad they had a reason why. Freya had a reason why she should be sad, her loved one went to war, her home was besieged and when she found her lover he forgot who she was.

I seem to be in a strange minority among my friends and a lot of online people. I actually really like some of the newer fan-hated ones like X and XII (2nd and 3rd favorite respectively), but my #1 is fan-favorite VI.
Haven't played XIII yet based on some of what I've heard about it, though I might get it if the price drops to say...$10.

What I took away from it is that I really, really wish I were able to actually wander around those gorgeous setpieces they threw up everywhere. Reaching the city of Nautilus and seeing all these gorgeous locales in the background, and then being railroaded through it away from all the cool shit was the last straw for me. It's basically a game you buy to show off a fancy new HDTV and PS3, not really one you buy to, y'know, play or enjoy.
I'd be lying if I said I'm not a total graphics whore, but you're right, it can only take a game so far; I'll take pretty and dumb, but not at the ratio FFXIII offers.
Meanwhile, I'm on my third Dragon Age playthrough and that game's not even that good looking.

I played 13 for all of maybe...2 hours? I got it for free though, so I didn't pay anything. I finally got sick of the linear corridors, fucking ENDLESS cutscenses that didn't explain what the fuck the plot was, or the keeping of the same characters long enough to figure out what the hell is going on. "Okay, were a band of rebels fighting the system! Lets go help these people. Whooops, lets go follow this brother and sister for a while, just for the hell of it."
SUPPOSSEDLY it gets better much further in, like 15 hours. But any game that takes 15 hours to get to the part that is actually GOOD is 15 hours too much filler.

Whever someone says stuff like that I just don't bother. Admittedly that is the reason why I never liked Earthbound. In comparison I got far into Shadow Madness for the PSX before giving up on it.
Story is good and all but if I cannot enjoy the game I won't force myself to play it. At least Shadow Madness was less painful to play.
And before anyone asks I gave Earthbound two chances. As said, an RPG shouldn't suck going in to get better later on. For me, Earthbound sucked going in. Shadow Madness was just boring.

'Tis a sad truth, "Final Fantasy" is closer to "Infinite Inferiority" now a days. . . Long past is the age of 8 and 16 bit splendor, with which story was compelling, driving, and above all else, splendorous. Now are the days of , LUK AT R GRAFFEECS! (not to be confused with DAY TUK R JURBS)! . . . a sad sad state of affairs indeed. . .
MY condolences on your eye, young fair maiden of the console!!
But Fear Not!! Some Day! there shall be a reckoning! and all fantasies and disappointments that fell to dust shall be RE crumbled and their ashes burnt, and upon those ashes shall rise....!
...
...you know what don't kid your self, its really hit or miss these days with so little being able to be put into story rather than the momentary wow factors @_@
I personally stopped playing fantasies after 10, didn't even beat 10, I tried playing the GBA remake of FF6, but even THAT was screwed up..in the first 5 minutes it went from magic obliterated the world, and technology being re discovered, to, they abandoned magic, and technology replaced it. the music was squabbled into putrid sound, and the color scheme is more fitting kirby than the dark edgy plot of FF6.
At any rate, after my long lengthy rant, Love your artwork as usual x3

PSX, made by Square...that's right, SQUARE. . . when they were still making good games. It's a great game in my opinion, just look at the opening cinema for it on youtube. and it sadly had hardly ANY notoriety. it slipped under the radar completely, and for that it makes me sad.
another good...eh..kind of RPG 3rd person shooter adventure game series?..Mega Man Legends. the third one is coming out to the 3DS, going to be the last mega man game to have Inafune's hand involved with it. so that means Ive lost yet another franchise' faith xD

I honestly gave up on XIII. There had never been an RPG where I just kept mashing the acion button because I didn't really know what was going on. The story is really interesting to understand, and the graphics are top notch. It is just that is the worst fighting system I've ever played, if one would call it th playing.
That's because while 13 is polishde to as much of a shine as it could (regardless of anybody's tastes), 14 is a buggy, unfinished, outsourced piece of crap that is basically unplayable, and an MMO really cannot have launches that are SO BAD the devs make the game subscription free until it gets fixed.
I know everybody here is gonna hate me for saying this, but: I liked Final Fantasy X2. I'm a 30 year old rural American with no interest whatsoever for anime and even less for chick flicks. The graphics and character designs were stupidly over the top, the voice acting of those perky squeeky girls grated, the story was emo and made me want to throw up in my mouth.
BUUUUUUUT......
The actual gameplay itself, you know, the stuff where you use the controller to manipulate stuff to make it interact with other stuff, is EXCELLENT. The real time combat that still didn't have to resort to AI, the changeable and customizable classes with a mind bogglingly huge variety of skills and powers to equip and level up to create tons of fighting variety... sure the mini games you have to play now and then are stupid but still tolerable.
I mean, criticize stuff like graphics and story and characters and style and sound and voice acting all you like. When it ultimately gets right down to it the only truly important thing is the gameplay. May I remind you that GAMEPLAY is the REASON we PLAY GAMES?

Ten was fine for me. Not a brilliant game, but entertaining at least.
I got 12 and played it for all of about 5 hours spread over about a week because I couldn't stand it for more than about an hour at a time.
Also, see link:http://www.escapistmagazine.com/vid.....l-Fantasy-XIII

It's a long, dark hallway full of pretty but repetitive battles. There are no doors or windows, but at one point it widens slightly to fit a f**k-ton of gigantic creatures that can kill you just by walking near you. The story's whole theme is based on just how little choice you have and how there are literally no alternate routes to take whatsoever. Granted, most Japanese RPGs are like that, but at least they give some semblance of choice by having side-quests that give you better crap. There is no better crap in FFXIII. It's all just different flavors.
... well, I played it, and enjoyed it. Sure, a few things were eye-roll worthy, but I overall had fun. And regarding the linearity... I hear a lot of complains about it, but a lot of people go from point a to point b and there is often little point to backtracking in a lot of games. heck, I seem to recall FF9 usually destroyed most setting places after you had gone through them!
Now, the game does feel like a "mash X" fest for a long time. Up until where you can finally decide who to put on your team, really, at which point the game will pretty much begin to kick your ass if you don't begin to use actual strategies for the changes.
... also, I just can't dislike Sahz. Most down to earth protagonist I've seen in a game in a while.
(... and re: Dragon Age... while I had fun with this game too, it came down to Mages = Win everything. And DA2 is not giving me high hopes. "hey guys! Qunari have horns now! And you can't play a non-human! :D " )

Who the fuck plays Squeenix games these days? Ugh.
You know when I'll play another Squeenix game (besides the upcoming Deus Ex)? When they get off their asses and make Super Mario RPG 2. And Geno makes a comeback.
C'mon! He was a fucking doll reanimated by the stars! With rocket fists, and machineguns hidden in his arms! And laser cannons! And the strength of ten grinches, plus two!

No, it's called Paper Mario. "Super Mario RPG 2" was a working title that was booted for the current one, and has little-to-no relation with "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" whatsoever. It was also made loooong after Nintendo and Square had long thrown away their promise rings and decided they weren't BFFs anymore.
I played it not once, but almost a second time.
To me the problem was that it took far too long to get the battle system in it's entirety to the point where it was actually decent. The pacing was sluggish, not to mention they have you fight an Eidolon, and then the story shunts you to a totally different place for a while, so that just when you thought you snagged an awesome power, it cockblocks you for a few hours.
But once it finally did get going, I absolutely fell in love with the battle system. I'll give Square one thing-they're gettind damn good at Pseudo-Realtime Combat.
Now if they'd just make Kingdom Hearts 3 already...

13, like 10, was eyecandy. With the retirement of the lead story designer and lead music director, they're not what they used to be. 9 was a tribute to the first one, with all the references to Garlan and the 4 devils. After that, Final Fantasy is just a name that draws money. If you want story, go replay 6. If you want eyecandy, by all means, get anything after 9. 10, 10-2, 13. All sweet delicious eyecandy, Oh, and don't forget the j-pop music.
The only other FF game I played was Crystal Chronicles for the Gamecube if that even counts. I can say that it was a lot more fun than XIII. The type of combat in this game is very un-fun. Fiddling about with paradigms and standing around charging while your character gets slammed just sucks. On some stages all I'm doing is holding the A button and yawning and on others I'm dying in seconds even when I follow the walk through. Yeah its very pretty but its heading back to Gamestop for a trade. Soon.
