I love this process, but it's a bugger to ink everything four times.

These CMYK studies you did are some of the most interesting ways to work digitally that I've seen. The texture is especially nice.

It's in the "traditional" category, therefore I assume it is done with real pens and pencils and other such array of art.

The final execution is digital. It seems the linework was either on paper and scanned in portions as separate CMYK panels, or inked digitally in separate channels.

The colors appear too perfect to actually be pens (and if they are, that is some DAMN nice craftsmanship)

According to the deviantart account of the OP it says on the image description of the ferret one:

"This time, it's a single sketch printed out three times in blue, inked in three different ways, rescanned, and the results layered in the C, M and Y channels."

& fr. this one:

"Pen times four, using all four printing inks this time. (Next time, I'll remember that yellow isn't as visible as magenta.)"

But actual colouring is done with real pens & real ink using aniline dyes or pigment ink, so it seems, though as you say, combined on the computer.

The actual coloring is done by separating black lineart into CMYK channels digitally, otherwise there would be no need to separate the ink into CMYK channels.

I'm positive he inked each of these in black.

It is four drawings in black pen, put onto separate CMYK channels. I categorise it as 'traditional' because the care and work goes into the real-media drawings, while the digital bit was only technical process, notwithstanding that it gives the final picture its distinctiveness.

Of course, this is the sort of important issue that one should be forced to think about every time one submits a picture. I'd gladly scrap the traditional/digital divide.

I see what you mean - the majority of the work was done with traditional methods. There's a tendency of categorizing artwork based on the finishing methods, but it could go either way depending on the artist's views.

I'll have to try this method again, using your technique more closely.

This is awsome. it is very rare that you see one of theis type of pictures
( y'know, the kind of thing they used to do in the old school comic books, i forget what it is called)
