Disegno dell‘eroe leggendario Colapesce, maledetto dalla madre per essere un buono a nulla che sta sempre in mare. Quando gli crebbero gola di rana e zampe d’oca, si tuffò in mare e non tornò mai più sulla terraferma. Aiutando i pescatori, la sua fama crebbe a tal punto che pure l’imperatore Federico II lo Svevo lo incaricò di sommergersi negli abissi davanti a Messina per accontentare la sua eterna curiosità. Nicola, scoprendo che la Sicilia giaceva su tre colonne, una delle quali era crepata, si sacrificò per tenere in equilibrio l’isola.

Als ihm Froschhals und Entenfüße wuchsen, tauchte er ins Wasser und kehrte nie mehr zum festen Land zurück. Er wurde so berühmt, daß sogar der Kaiser Friedrich II. Ihn aufrief, um seine ewige Neugier zu stillen. Als Cola Pesce auf des Kaisers Befehl das Meer vor Messina erforschte, fand er heraus, daß ganz Sizilien auf drei Säulen liegt, von denen eine am brökeln war. Drum opferte er sich, um seine Heimatinsel zu retten.
Sketch of the legendary hero Cola Pesce (Nick Fish), cursed by his mother for spending all his time in the sea, rather than work. When he grew frog lungs and goose feet, he dove into the water and never returned to land. Word of this extraordinary man came to the emperor Frederick II, he ordered Cola Pesce to explore the depths in front of Messina, to satisfy the monarch’s neverending curiosity. On his quest, Cola found that Sicily was held up by three columns, one of which was breaking down, so he held it up himself, saving his island from disaster.
