This week's prompt was Hourglass
“May your knowledge be like sand,
a million thoughts for every grain of truth.”

If there had been mirrors in the forest, Destiny would’ve seen flashes of a woman-faced red panda gliding through the brush. She would’ve known it was her, rushing past sentinel trees when all the lights were out in the neighborhood. She saw a fire in the distance, set up by her friends at a private costume party in the wood cabin at the center of the forest reserve.
She didn’t expect to see the human skins lying on the ground.
The sight was eerie and out of dream induced by too much food, too much passion, too much stress. She saw their appearance like plastic bags, so inhuman and yet so real. They weren’t bloody or grotesque. Rather, they were dry and cracked like snakeskin with empty holes behind the mouth and eyes.
“Destiny!” a voice cried out. The she-panda turned to see a dragon-faced boy standing on the upper balcony of the two-story cabin. In his claw he held a small toy, perfectly mimicking his current appearance. “I did it! I really did it!” he yelled, hollered and whooped, dancing on scaled feet across creaking hardwood. He stopped. “Where’s your template?”
Destiny kept away from the discarded skins and placed her paws up to her mouth to amplify her voice. “What happened here? Is this some sort of trick?”
The dragon boy looked confused and fluttered to the ground like an astronaut in freefall. He stood lithe, tall, beautiful. “Do you understand what’s going on?”
“No! This is crazy! Tell me you’re wearing a costume,” Destiny pleaded.
The dragon boy shook his head. “You shouldn’t be aware of this.” He looked down at a glint of metal hanging from Destiny’s neck. “What’s that?”
The red panda looked down at the hourglass hanging on her chest. The sands were already halfway down. She felt a surge of fear at the thought of removing the article, shook her head and backed away. The firelight burned brightly in the backyard as she witnessed several people stumbling towards it. Like moths to the flame, they fell into the inferno and keeled over. Destiny watched in horror as the people crossed to the other side and limped toward the dragon with bodies cracking and peeling. The face and shoulders of one fell down around her body as a charred, blackened form stood in the glow. Wings erupted from her back as she fell to her knees and peered up at the sky.
Destiny backed away and wished the mysterious source of the blackout hadn’t knocked her phone out. She turned and ran through the underbrush as her body naturally transitioned onto all fours.
The world started to shift around her and she knew her hour was approaching.
She saw herself small, furred and tenacious as a red panda with a mind growing by the minute. At the trickle of a single grain of sand, she was given the knowledge of her predicament in the flash of an instant. A few milliseconds later and she was given more about the shockwave rippling through the world, changing everything to suit the needs of an unseen hand. As her body became more animal, her mind became fiercer and faster as she began to live between the seconds.
Destiny saw humans disappearing in the past as a race of elder beasts from the sky descended at a distance like mist over a mountain. History erupted in a shockwave of change while her form was held intact, fused and reshaped for purposes throughout several dimensions. Still her human heart sat in her chest, waiting. Safe.
The change came and went, and the running stopped. A woman-faced red panda, back to full growth, was crying over the stress as she waited to awaken. Waited seconds which seemed like an eternity…

Thanks! It is quite confusing because I do what I can to move past normal imagery and make unexpected image associations. It works better in some cases than others, though I saw something here in the story about the woman-faced red panda and hoped to use it later for a longer, more refined tale.
