When a cosmic dragon ascends, the newly created dragon form comes with an innate base understanding of how to manipulate their universe pearl. As they gain experience over time, they increase in size, with the largest ones being mountainous to the others. There have been a few exceptions though, where a cosmic dragon was already a dragon prior to ascending. In these cases, the existing dragon form seems to be simply copied over as is, without any new additional knowledge. Such dragons awaken as a much smaller size than their hatchling peers and need to learn or be taught even the basics. By the time they catch up to their peers in experience, they are usually on pace with them in scale as well.

Ryu is one such example of being a dragon before ascending, and as such did not gain the additional knowledge. However due to their ascension method of literally outgrowing their previous universe, it resulted in their cosmic dragon form being larger than average. This larger size was initially hidden by their lack of natural knowledge, and hasn't really become apparent until they've started catching up with the others new cosmic dragons...
