It was a beautiful day for a ride, sunny and dry, and the long stretch of open road had been calling to him all week. So when Saturday came, he just had to get into his leathers, get his bike out of the garage, and left his house to get breakfast.
Herbert coasted his motorcycle to a halt in the parking lot of the roadside diner, switched off the engine, and was setting the kickstand when he heard engine sounds coming up behind and to his left. He doffed his helmet as an older cougar wearing an old German-style Stahlhelm for a helmet came riding up. “Hi,” the hyena said as the feline shut off his bike and took his own helmet off. “Name’s Herb.”
“Richie,” the cougar said. His leather jacket bore the insignia of a local motorcycle gang, but he appeared to be an easygoing sort. “Sweet ride you got there,” he said to Herbert, “but I followed you all the way to here to ask you.”
“Yeah?”
“Um, why – “
The hyena smiled. He’d heard this before. “Why does watching the wheels give you a headache?”
“Yeah.”
“It’s a Cthulhu Mythos Cycle.” He patted the fuel tank. “The wheels move at right angles to reality. Really saves on gas. Say, you’ve got a nice bike too.”
“Thanks. Made it myself,” Richie said proudly.
“Really!? Wow!”
“Yeah. Frame’s off a Harley, engine’s a Triumph, transmission’s from a Yamaha, and Honda wheels. Took me a while going through junkyards to get what I wanted, and a few months in my garage to get them to all fit together.”
“Holy crap.”
Richie chuckled, running a paw across the handlebars as if the machine was a huge pet. “Some of the guys in the club thought I was crazy, but it always draws a crowd up in Sturgis for Bike Week.”
Herbert whistled. He’d always wanted to go to that. “So, it’s part Harley, Honda, Yamaha, and, ah – “ His ears dipped as he tried to remember what the fourth brand had been.
“Triumph.” The cougar grinned.
“Got to say, that’s really impressive. What do you call something like that?”
“Yeah. I call it my recycle.”
