Yeah, moxi's version is a little more decayed than the real asbury park, but the town has really turned around in the past decade or so. It's become the home of a burgeoning gay community who has really cleaned up the place. It is still a fairly pretty and small city, and the boardwalk is an underrated New Jersey fixture. Here's a pic that I think was a reference for the background:
