That's way high for the style. I've had barrel-aged scotch ales that weren't even that strong.

What the heck did you do to pull that kind of ABV?

I used vodka to sterilize the bottles and equipment. >.>

I also may have done the math wrong on the hydrometer calculations.

All I know is that all I need to feel tipsy is one beer.

I'm sort of a beer geek so I'm working my way towards eventually brewing. One of my first attempts is definitely going to be a scotch ale. I'm going to make it as authentic as possible by caramelizing the malt over peat-fueled fires for that characteristic smokiness that I'm so fond of.

Have you had Founders Dirty Bastard? It's one of the best American-brewed variations on the style I've had. As far as stuff that comes straight out of Scotland Traquair House Ale is fantastic, as well.

I made a scotch ale cause it was recommended to me for flavor and body. I'm not much of a "beer geek", but the science behind it is something I understand and enjoy seeing in action. (and then drinking)
