Yes and no. I went to college to be a graphic designer. I wanted to do web design, but they didn't really offer any classes on that. I finished my degree and then realized I really love illustration. I tried going to a university for a studio art degree and... I dropped out after a semester. I'm sorry, but I'm not paying $2000 a semester to have people tell me that they won't give me advice on my project because they don't want to "unjustly influence the creative process" and "just do what you want to do. I will be impartial to my own tastes in grading." and then get C's and D's on projects because they didn't give him an "aesthetic experience." Don't get me wrong, I'm all for theoretical learning along with practical, but this was beyond theoretical and into ridiculous. That and the guys in the class consistently got lower grades than the girls. Coincidence? Maybe, but unlikely.
I should say I went to the University, because they had a system work outed with the community college I went to so I could turn my associates degree into a bachelor's degree, but instead of being a science degree (since that's what all the computer stuff fell into) it would be a bachelor's in studio art with a focus in electronic imaging. Based on my experiences and other art colleges I looked at before settling on the community college I went to I'd say going to an art college is a MUCH better idea for getting a studio art degree. After three years of college though I was satisfied with my associates degree. A bachelor's isn't as important in an art field as it is in others.
