Hehe, you nailed it. This is pretty mcuh the same answer you get when you ask someone what makes "Star Trek" so special. You dont really see that in sci fi anymore, that hope for the future, which is sad, since that is kind of what the genre is all about, at least to me.

Quite a few TV shows of the time period I grew up in fostered similar feelings in my friends. That hope for the future is what we felt, and since Gene is basically me in toon feline form... :)

The feeling nowadays seem to be nostaliga, a lot of sci fi is very retro, the best example is probably steampunk. I dunno what this says about modern times...

Yes, its unusual that sci-fi, that used to pride itself on how accurately it presaged the future, now seems to be more about the past.

I think this is the first link to the past times IN GCP universe and the past of their main characters. This explains a lot.

Yes, but not very much about the past of Gene itself and the other main characters. I was still finding difficult to place Gene, CW and Cotton past in the exact point of the GC universe history.

Excellent comic, Gene. Hope was one of the best beliefs in early Sci-Fi like Star Trek.

In the Basalt City Chronicles, I've got some stuff planned out, where there really IS a Galactic Defence. The organization is named after the television show.

I got the idea from a picture in your old Yerf archive, of Eugene Catlow leaving for his first tour of duty on the Galactic Defence.
