Buddy, I really tried to do it well and cool, but I'm afraid my head couldn't do anything with the clothes for this guy.. Haha..

The crossbow on itself is good. I think what you see as bad is the odd way he holds it?
A hand crossbow is not much different from a large pistol. But instead of using propellant driven ammunition, it used bolts which are propelled by force. Drawn from the side you might just make a longer kind of pistol and add the cross-section of one of the arms, eventually the string and holding mechanism + a bolt.
I really think beside the 45° outward angle of view, it is a pretty good crossbow.
