In TCoL universe (©  Lingrimm ), there are very special animals - eleworms/ They consume organic food and produce alternating electric current! And, since they don't seem to need air for this, me and my friend NurXL thought that they may be useful for air-independent propulsion.
Since there is no explosive weapons in Shang-La (which means no torpedoes - and thus no submarine weapons), military use of such submarines is impossible.
On the other hand, the ability to move secretly can be used by smugglers to avoid being caught with illegal (or untaxed) goods - just like Columbian drug cartels use submersible (or semi-submersible) boats to deliver their product to the USA.
So we took a german Type II U-Boot, a soviet M-class submarine, merged their designs, replaced torpedo room with a cargo hold, replaced diesel engines with solenoid electric engines and placed eleworm tanks in place of regular electric engines.
Since eleworm-powered propulsion does not require batteries, we decided to replace battery hold with additional storage, which will be used for eleworm food.
What goods does it help to smuggle? Well, it can vary from goods without paying the export/import taxes to weapons and, maybe, people (spies, criminals rich enough to pay for the trip...)
