Sitting in a small room with nothing but a tiny TV and a small window looking out into the dark early morning sky of the base at a tiny card table sat four furs playing a friendly game of poker. There sitting at that table was a cat with a metallic arm, Mia Mida, the head engineer and tactical planner for the group, A Doberman, Chad Ingrams the emergency pilot in case the autopilot malfunctioned and was irreparable. A Field mouse named Sylvia Pastel, a technical and engineering genius brought along as a translator and to help Mia if there were any issues . And last but not least the combat and survival specialist, a panda bear named simply Moe No one knew or dared to ask his last name, his imposing figure was enough to make those questions irrelevant.
These four were the lucky few chosen to participate in a top secret mission to travel to an unknown planet far away in search of life and technology and they, now finished with their training for space travel, were just playing the waiting game to be launched into the great beyond. The radio played a peaceful yet chilling tune as the new team sat, Chad drawing a card and getting a big grin on his muzzle as he spoke up.
"Well well would ya look at that! It looks like I am going to eat well when we get back home!" Laying down his cards he reveals a 4 of a kind . "unless of course you guys have any better?" Looking at each other around the table Moe simply lays down his cards with an unamused scowl on his face. Chad grinned at this and looked at the other two .
"Sorry big guy, better luck next time." Looking over at Mia and Sylvia, he smiles and rolls his eyes. "Well ladies? got anything to play or are you going to write out the checks now?" Sylvia let out a deep sigh and folded as well, hopping down from her chair and flipping on the TV looking for something to watch. Pouting a bit she muttered something to herself along the lines of betting money on a game was just stupid!
"Well well well kitty, that just leaves you and me doesn't it?" Smiling to himself full of the confidence and slight arrogance Mia had come to know from him over the last week. As she looked at the cards in her hand she couldn't help but crack a tiny smile of her own thinking back to one week prior when she met this new team, in this very room as a matter of fact, It was a wild day that was for sure she definitely didn't expect what she got when she laced up her boots that morning.
-one week before-
Walking through the halls of the training facility Mia was told that she would begin her training immediately after meeting her new crew. Feeling a bit flustered at being prodded and poked by doctors to see about her health and psychological well being she was a bit on edge. She stopped at a door she was told was a break room where the team was waiting. Taking a deep breath she opened the door and walked inside.
The room wasn't anything special, small with a table and a few chairs, a television and a radio. 'Yeesh.' She thought as she took in her surroundings 'This makes the workshop look like a five star joint.' Noticing movement on the other side of the room she looked over and saw 3 furs standing and watching the newcomer enter the room. Professional as she was, Mia stood at attention and saluted the group.
"Engineer and mechanic Mia Mida reporting for duty. I'm here to be your lead technician and tactics advisor for this mission. Considering all I know about tech… I hope we can all have a safe and prosperous journey on our mission and come back as heroes." Now she had to admit the last part sounded a bit hokey to her, maybe just a bit too much textbook speech there. It would seem that the others had the same idea.
A resounding laughter filled the small room making Mia’s ears flatten a bit at the sudden loud noise. Feeling the heat rise in her cheeks she sets down her files on the table and walks over to the most boisterous in the group, A hot shot looking doberman, getting up in his face and giving him a good stare down as she had learned to do over the years of working with punks around her various machines Looking at his uniform she took note of his ID tag 'Ingrams.'
"And just what is so funny there Mr. Ingrams?" Her sharp and demanding tone made the dog stop laughing almost immediately now it was his turn to droop his ears. Smiling confidently Mia was happy about asserting her dominance over this loud overgrown puppy. So much in fact that she let a small smile escape her lips as she turned around only to pale as she turned to see General Lawton standing in the doorway. An unusual grin on his brown wolfish muzzle as he spoke.
"Well I see you have all met the Mechanic and team lead. Though I don't think such theatrics are necessary Miss Mida, you will be getting to know each other quite a bit in the upcoming weeks. Now I think proper introductions are in order and I believe since you all know Mia here we should start with your pilot. Mr.Ingrams if you would please."
Walking to stand in front of Mia the doberman stood and saluted her looking a lot more professional than a few minutes ago. He was probably about 6 feet, even taller than the cat by a good foot easily. His black and brown fur made him look a bit menacing yet he had a certain playfull spark in his eyes that would suggest playfulness not unlike an overgrown puppy.
"Names Chad Ingrams just Chad to my friends and teammates. And for the record Miss Mida I thought your little introduction was cute." Winking as he steps out of the way, Mia's view is obstructed by a gigantic panda stepping up to the proverbial plate. A strong looking body he was easily the tallest of the group at 6 '6 he towered over them.
"Survival team expert and medic of the team, my name's Moe. It is an honor to meet you Mia. I have heard a few stories around the base about your team's excellent coordination and executions of your tasks. It will be an interesting mission working with you. I will help us if the worst of the worst is to happen." The behemoth stepped out of the way to stand beside Chad at attention as the last member walked up and saluted. Looking down Mia knew if she wasnt so well trained to be professional she may have giggled.
Easily the smallest of the group Sylvia Pastel stood at only 4'4 saluting and looking up at Mia with a deep fiery passion in her eyes. The engineering cat couldn't help but feel almost giant in comparison but, and she couldn't put her finger on it, Mia felt like she knew this little mouse from somewhere else but... where? Mia was broken from her thoughts by a tiny squeaky voice confidently speaking to her.
"Assistant engineer and head translator of the team Sylvia Pastel, reporting for duty ma'm. I've been all around the world with the military translating many different dialects and cracking many secret codes. I plan on being a true asset to the team in any way that I can!" Giggling a little bit she stepped off to the others as they all saluted in unison. As the team saluted the general gave a bit of a proud smile before once again becoming stoic and taking a breath as if he were addressing his troops.
"Alright everyone enough chit chat! You've all met and that's fine and dandy but the time for talking stops now! Training rooms now go go go!." As they all headed off to their first official day of training they would come to bond through the trials and by the end of the week they were a close knit unit ready for whatever was to come their way.
Back in the present Mia grinned Looking over the cards in her hands, she inwardly smiled before drooping her ears and frowning . Clutching the cards to her breast she stood up and did a few overly dramatic twirls the two who folded watched on in mild amusement. Chad for his part was smiling as he watched the cat in despair he simply shook his head.
"Oh poor kitten hoping your acting will make me fold eh? well tough luck there Mia I think you should just give up the act. It's actually kind of sad at this point." Mia stopped her charade and threw her cards down onto the table revealing an 8,7,6,5,4 of hearts. A royal flush. Chad was in complete shock.
"I... you.. how did... you had a!" He managed to stammer out as Mia put her hands on her hips looking at him with a stare of total confidence and smug satisfaction as she walked over and patted his head condescendingly.
"Aww the poor puppy is at a loss for words? News flash buddy you can't outwit me." she winks a bit and lets a little laugh escape as Chad gathers up the cards putting them away mumbling something about getting her back next time. When suddenly the door opens and in walks a few scientists and the general speaking with urgency he addresses them all.
"Alright team! The time has come these two are going to go get you fitted for your suits and equipment and then you will be getting onto the rocket. I want to take this time to thank you all for this mission and that you are doing something that has never been done before. This is an important mission and you are all the best of the best. Don't let us down there troops now let's move!"
As they headed out and followed the respective scientists they all knew that the next time they saw each other would be when they were heading for the shuttle to blast into the unknown. Each one of them had nervous butterflies in their tummies walking into the respective rooms to be fitted.
