I've only seen the "cat afraid of cucumber" thing referenced twice. Here and in Vicki Fox.
I didn't get it, so I googled it.
Apparently, cats are scared of cucumbers only because, if caught unaware, like if it is placed next to them without them noticing, they think it is a snake, and so treat it as a threat.
