Hatchetfish, as you can see, spend almost all of their time at the surface and rarely venture towards the lower levels
They also feel safer in groups but, unfortunately, they're notorious jumpers that will find their way out of any opening, which is how I lost all of mine... Managed to get to one in time, didn't think they'd make it, but here they are almost a decade later... Especially impressive because they usually only live up to five years in captivity! o.o

Don’t worry I have^^ (also you know hatchetfish? :D or did you read in the description?)
But anyways I had a lit but they manage to find their way out of the smallest opening, like where my filter is. Didn’t think they’d notice but one by one they all got out^^;

Oh I know, hehe, I've got hatchets of my own. I have a school of 6 silvers with an oddball Spotted that was caught in the mix in my 45 gallon. And in my 29 gallon I have 4 Pygmies, which sadly 3 disappeared one day and I did put a towel around the whole lid but i believe that they had jumped too. :( I haven't lost hatchets to my absolute knowledge this way, but did lose a few to ich in my rookie days of fishkeeping. One little guy in the silver squad is more nervous than the others and has jumped a few times during feedings but I've always caught him with no issue... it's been a year since he's done that.
Hatchets have been my favourite fish since I first read about them in a book in the early 2000s.
I share pictures of my tanks/fish periodically on here as well

Ah cool and oh wow!^^ Aw sorry to hear, and dang :o (I remember reading once that hatchetfish are usually wild caught and can be susceptible at ich as a result. In fact a youtuber I follow actually kept some marbled hatchets in first community tank but quarantine them as long as she could and lost them to ich^^; ) Aww, but it's good you're able to catch them. Hopefully they'll calm down in time.
Same here actually! Read a book in my school's library about freshwater fish, and showed an image of fish occupying different levels of the tank, including hatchetfish and kuhli loaches. Really love their unique look, and in my research I see them recommended for community tanks fairly often because of their peaceful nature.
Ah nice^^ I'll be sure to check them out. Right now I only have one tank, looking to rehome some of the fish I have before restocking it, but I have plans on getting a couple of my old ones setup some time in the future. And until then I'm working on a sort of "beginner's guide" and doing plenty of research for it :P

I wanted some Marbeled for a while until I saw how short their lifespan is. It's a big reason I stay away from killifish and endlers... so heartbreaking :'( Marbeled Hatchets are actually the only ones in the family who will willingly breed in captivity! I think he was scared because of the glass catfish having bad eyesight and getting very excited to eat, one probably bumped into him a few times. I now close the little fast but gently as well, as soon as I've fed them. I used to love letting the fish eat from my fingers! I did know about about being wild caught too. I made the mistake of ordering from LiveAquaria twice and both times I was screwed oved... I ordered Albino Silver Hatchets and all three were missing their eyes and passed away. The second time I was sent Spotted, and that's how I ended up with my odd man out who doesn't seem to mind schooling with the Silvers!
Hatchets are just so derpy and adorable. I haven't had loaches but I'd like like try out the Rosies or Dwarf Chains. Have you seen the Elongated Hatchets, they're really awkward looking lol.
Hope your beginners guide can get a good take off!

Ahh, I see :o I hear about marble hatchetfish more often than just “hatchetfish”, even saw them listed at Petco during my last trip, and I guess that’s why, but didn’t know about their lifespan. At least killifish and endlers can be bread easily to keep the line going, same with furcata rainbow fish from what I’ve heard.
Aw poor thing. Ah I haven’t been able hand feeding any of mine but am trying to get them used to be when I can.
Albino hatchets, didn’t know they had those, but missing their eyes geez… Well nice to hear he’s able to enjoy their company!
Daww. I’ve noticed mine isn’t shy at all, likes to explore and hang the lower levels of the tank, even seems eager to be fed when I open the lid^^ Oh I know someone who has some experience with dwarf chain loaches, they have beautiful patterns and wonderful personality, they flap their fins like little dolphins and chase each other “follow the leader” still, and when she added a betta to the tank they went up to investigate but didn’t nip or anything, and when fed they’d actually hang out on the side waiting for scraps xDD
I myself…have clown loaches^^;; Got then as a beginner for my 55 gallon, one of those people thinking they’d have a big enough tank before they got too big… They’re only a inches long (I used to have a pleco that was over a foot…) but I’m still looking to regime them
Never heard of an elongated hatchetfish, but I can imagine so! xD
Thanks! It probably won’t since I won’t even know how to post it, but I try to make it as accurate and informative as I can, especially with all the misinformation out there (so many times I see people listing mollies as a hardy, peaceful species for a 10 gallon tank!)
